Region 1 Mega-Match

Lakeview shot a 338 to capture the fourth Region 1 Mega-Match of the season at The Greens at Salvatora Farms in Jamestown.

Greenville (345) placed second, Jamestown (367) was third, Mercer (426) took fourth, and Reynolds (455) was fifth.

Mercer’s Eli Ellison earned medalist honors by carding a 6-over-par 78. Lakeview’s Jackson Gadsby shot 80.

Mega-Match

Slippery Rock captured the fifth Region 2 Mega-Match of the season on Tuesday at Tam O’Shanter. It was the first mega-match of the season that wasn’t won by Grove City.

The Rockets shot a 336, followed by West Middlesex (354), Grove City (360), Wilmington (363), Sharon (394), and Sharpsville (431).

Slippery Rock standout Jacob Wolak earned medalist honors with a 76.

• Grove City 16, Slippery Rock 47 — At Slippery Rock, the Eagles captured seven of the top eight spots to beat the Rockets.

Quinn McKnight was first and MJ Pottinger took second for GC (both times were 18:13) while Justice Brown (18:21) placed third and Colsen Frank (18:23) was fourth.

Viktor Zahn (18:29) finished fifth to lead the way for Slippery Rock.

• West Middlesex 15, Mercer 50 — At Mercer, the Mustangs did not field a full team.

Nick Varga (18:46), Luke Schneider (18:48), Giovanni Rococi (19:27), Dennis Jones (20:54), and Derek Johnson (21:20) finished one through five.

Chase Allen led Mercer with a fifth-place finish in 22:17.

GIRLS

• Grove City 24, Slippery Rok 35 — At Slippery Rock, Grove City freshman Josie Jones clocked in at 22:18 to win the race. The Eagles placed seven runners in the top 10.

Lexi Doerflinger (22:45) and Tessa Szymanski (22:51) took second and third for the Rockets.

• West Middlesex 23, Mercer 32 — At Mercer, Mustangs’ standout Willow Myers clocked in at 22:07 to take first place on Tuesday.

AnnaSophia Viccari (23:20), Lia Bartholomew (23:21), and Ella Bartholomew (23:48) finished second through fourth, respectively.

BOYS SOCCER

• Hampton 1, Slippery Rock 0 (OT) — At Allison Park, the Rockets suffered a tough overtime loss to the Talbots.

No stats were reported to The Herald.

GIRLS SOCCER

• Hickory 1, Mercer 1 (2OT) — At Hornet Stadium, the Hickory soccer team held its annual “Kick-Out Cancer” event, which raised funds for the American Cancer Society.

Those affected by cancer were honored with a silent lap around the track with participation from fans, as well as both teams. Additionally, the Hornet players recognized their grandparents and thanked them for all that they do.

Mercer, the defending District 10 Class 1A champs, took a 1-0 lead in the first half. Hickory goalie Daisy Rust, along with defenders Izzy Hochstetler, Ava Chaser, Riley Kellar, and Avery Thompson kept the score at 1-0, buying time for the offense to tie the game in the second half.

Senior Captain Abby Cozad took a corner kick, placing it right in the mix where senior captain Ella Vance fought her way through to tie the game at 1-all.

Following a pair of exciting overtime sessions, the two teams battled to a 1-all draw.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

• Sharpsville 3, Mercer 0 — At Sharpsville, the Devils (1-0, 2-1) opened Region 3 play with a 25-11, 25-13, 25-18 sweep.

Sharpsville honored Chasie Fry with a ball for becoming the school’s all-time leading digs leader (840) on Saturday at the Ft. LeBoeuf Tournament. She surpassed Eve Mohney’s (2018 graduate) mark of 772.

SR: Virginia Recchia led the team with 45 digs and 12 assists. Junior Molly Bissel had a team-high 17 kills with junior Avalee Demidovich adding 14. Junior Anora Robare had 28 assists. Reynolds: Annie Loposky had a match-high 33 assists. Kylie McAdoo had a team-high 16 digs with six points. Rylee Gearhard finished with 16 kills, 14 digs and six points. Ava Murcko had a team-high 15 points with 15 digs, and Marissa Hassell recorded 14 digs.

GIRLS GOLF

Hickory had another strong performance on the links in the Region 1 Mega-Match at Tam O’Shanter. The Hornets had the top-three individual scores at their home course.

The Hornets shot a team score of 216, led by Sasha Petrochko’s 70. Luciana Masters wasn’t too far behind her medalist teammate with a 72, and Ava Liburdi had a 74. Sophomores Ava Miklos and Madeline Myers both shot a 97.

Freshman Kate Sowers led West Middlesex with a 76 as the Big Reds recorded a 302 for second place. Maya Mourtacos and Kylie Kimpan both carded a 113, and KK Leonard had a 115.

Conneaut Area came in third with 357.

Grove City was fourth with 357. Annie Arnold led the Eagles at 113, Emily McIlwain had a 118, Elle Myford shot a 126 and Emily Sindlinger had 130.

Reynolds was not added to the team scores due to only having two golfers. Zoe Stern led the Raiders with a 76, and Anna Harpst had a 94.

Jacob Wolak shot a 76 to earn medalist honors as he led Slippery Rock to a Region 2 Mega-Match win at Tam O’Shanter Golf Course.

The Rockets finished with a 336 as Kellan Stoughton-Drogowski carded a 78, Levi Prementine shot an 88, and Tyler Rice and James Gillen each had a 94.

West Middlesex came in second with a 354 led by John Partridge’s 84. Conner Stover added an 87, Caden Bender shot 91 and Bowen Briggs wasn’t far behind at 92.

Grove City was just behind the Big Reds with a 360. Ethan Cunningham led the Eagles with an 80 followed by Josh Benka’s 92. Tyler Hamilton and Trent Nemec each finished with a 94.

Wilmington came in fourth at 363. Kaitlyn Hoover was the leader for the Greyhounds with an 83. Garrett Heller added an 89, Presley Deep shot 91 and Alexandria Settle carded 100.

Lex Dobosh shot a 9 as Sharon came in fifth at 394. Will Beckert finished with a 97, Lucas Province had 100 and Carmine Thomas rounded out the Tigers’ scores with a 103.

Sharpsville came in sixth at 431. Christian Wedge’s 99 led the way for the Blue Devils. Jake Tonty shot 106, Aiden Minoff a 112 and Mathew Colich had 114.

Luke Irvin posted the shutout in goal for Fairview.

• Grove City 5, Franklin 0 — At Franklin, coach Michael Coulter’s Eagles picked up the Region 1 road win against the Knights.

Macy Matson, Ella West, and Emily Williams led the way with wins in singles’ play.

Greenville shot a 348 on Thursday to win the fifth Region 1 Mega-Match of the season at Spring Valley Golf Course.

Greenville’s Brandon Stubert earned medalist honors by carding a 79 at the par 72 layout. Mercer’s Eli Ellison shot 80 and Greenville’s Nate Stuyvesant and Lakeview’s Jackson Gadsby both shot 81.

The other team scores were Lakeview (348), Jamestown (397), Mercer (427), and Reynolds (462).

FRIDAY

FOOTBALL

• Sharpsville 28, Slippery Rock 14 — In Slippery Rock, the Blue Devils came out victorious over the Rockets in a battle of undefeated teams.

The game was tied at 14 at halftime, but Sharpsville (2-0, 4-0) went on a 16-play, eight-minute drive in the third quarter to gain momentum. The Devils capped the drive with a 27-yard touchdown pass from Caullin Summers to Dalton Byerly.

Summers was 13-for-24 with 203 yard passing and four touchdowns. He also posted a game-high 128 yards rushing on 24 carries.

Garen Levis was Summers’ game-breaking target. He caught three passes for 117 yards and two touchdowns – a 62-yard TD catch for the Devils’ first score and a 53-yard grab later in the first half.

John Sabo caught eight passes from quarterback William Mokel for 129 yards and a score. Mokel was 15-for-27 for 216 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions.

Brett Galcik led the Rockets (1-1, 3-1) with 93 yards rushing on nine attempts.

• Grove City 41, Sharon 25 — At Tiger Stadium, the Eagles (1-1, 2-2) pulled away in the Region 3 clash by outscoring Sharon 21-0 in the second quarter.

Grove City quarterback Hunter Hohman scored a pair of rushing touchdowns (14 and 47 yards) and threw a 54-yard TD pass to Gavin Lutz.

Anthony Nemec added a pair of rushing touchdowns for the Eagles while Lutz picked off a pass and returned it 40 yards for a score and Nate Greer scooped up a fumble and returned it 78 yards for a touchdown.

The two defensive touchdowns are the fourth and fifth of the season for Grove City. The Eagles have scored at least one defensive TD in every game this season.

Hohman was 7-of-13 for 183 yards and Lutz pulled in five passes for 144 yards, a career high. His previous mark was 142 receiving yards against Northwestern in Week 2.

For Sharon (1-1, 2-2), quarterback Mikey Rodriques rushed for a touchdown and threw a pair of touchdown tosses to Jayveerh White (20 yards) and Rayvion Wilbon-Venable (22 yards). Karemez Norris also scored on a 55-yard run.

Rodriques, who surpassed 2,000 career passing yards (2,095) in the game, was 17-of-31 for 170 yards and led the team in rushing (14-62). Lamont Austin made four catches for 63 yards.

• Lakeview 24, Maplewood 7 — At Guys Mills Friday, coach Bill Hickman’s Sailors improved to a perfect 3-0 in Region 1 and 3-1 overall with the win over the Tigers (1-2, 2-2).

The Lakeview defense turned in an impressive performance with six interceptions — three by Evan Sanford and the others by Cameron Pence, Danick Hinkson, and Leyton Zacherl.

“The six interceptions was my first as a coach,” said Hickman. “Our defense played lights out and limited their star running back to very minimal yardage.”

The Sailors went up 7-0 in the first quarter on a 10-yard interception return by Pence and Mitchell Tingley’s extra-point kick. Tinley booted a 25-yard field goal in the second quarter to make it 10-0.

Lakeview tacked on a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns by Pence (11-yard run) and Tingley (9-yard run). Tinley converted both PATs.

Maplewood’s lone score was in the fourth frame on a 10-yard TD pass from Andrew Proper to Dominick Kinney.

Pence was 2-of-5 for 23 yards for Lakeview while Tingley rushed for 103 yards on 19 carries. Zacherl (1-17) and Sean Cole (1-6) caught passes for the Sailors.

• Mercer 42, Saegertown 24 — At Saegertown Friday, Daemyin Mattocks rushed for 108 yards and two touchdowns as the Mustangs (1-1, 2-2) picked up the Region 1 road win.

Mattocks scored on runs of 64 and 21 yards while Carter Addison had a 69-yard TD run, Nathan Haines reached the end zone on a 14-yard run and 53-yard interception return, and Troy Bachman picked off a pass and returned it 45 yards for a score.

Saegertown fell to 0-4 in Region 1 and 0-4 overall.

Lakeview (159) finished second and Hickory (167) placed third. Ft. Leboeuf (170) and Brookville (193) rounded out the top five teams. Slippery Rock was 14th, Reynolds 15th, Sharpsville 16th, Wilmington 17th, Commodore Perry 18th, Mercer 20th, and Jamestown 25th.

Lakeview senior standout Colson Jenkins, the defending District 10 Class 1A champion, won the individual title in a time of 16:56. Hickory sophomore Caden Riethmiller was runner-up in 17:04.

Lakeview freshman James Alexander placed fifth in 17:40, Slippery Rock junior Viktor Zahn clocked in at 17:59 to finish ninth, and Hickory sophomore Mason Coldsmith (18:04) finished 11th.

Freshman Tully Caiazza led Wilmington by placing 22nd in 18:42. Mercer sophomore Luke Childers (18:44) was 23rd, Sharpsville sophomore Jonathan Bissell (18:44) finished 24th, and Hickory sophomore Logan Rodgers was 25th in a time of 18:44.

GIRLS

Seneca (126), Trinity (160), Hickory (162), and Slippery Rock (181) rounded out the top five girls teams. Lakeview (198) was sixth, Mercer (227) was 10th, Sharpsville (247) 11th, Commodore Perry (342) placed 14th, and Sharon (385) was 16th.

Local competitors captured four of the top five spots. Mercer senior Willow Myers clocked in at 19:40 to place first. She was followed by Hickory sophomore Jillian White (20:46), Jamestown sophomore Karis McElhaney (20:52), Meadville freshman Megan Puleio (21:06), and Sharon senior Abby Douglas (21:15).

Lakeview senior Kady Alexander placed sixth in 21:19 and freshman teammate Kendall Emmert (21:49) finished 10th. Slippery Rock sophomore Tessa Szymanski placed 11th in 21:50.

Wilmington senior Emma Mason clocked in at 22:03 to finish 13th, Slippery Rock senior Lexi Doerflinger (22:29) placed 20th.

Sharpsville junior Lauren Aiello (23:13) placed 30th, Commodore Perry freshman Elaine Welton (23:19) was 33rd, Hickory freshman Emma Iacino (23:24) was 34th, Sharpsville senior Lyndzie Springer (23:26) finished 35th, and Commodore Perry junior Bella Snyder finished 36th in 23:27.

Region 1 Mega-Match

Fresh off of Sunday’s second-place finish in the 2-day McDowell Invitational in Harborcreek, the Hornets made it 4-for-4 in mega-matches this season with a win at Grove City Country Club.

Luciana Masters was medalist with a 74 and Ava Liburdi carded a 79 to lead Hickory (234 strokes) to victory. Sasha Petrochko, last season’s District 10 Class 2A champ, shot an 81.

West Middlesex freshman standout Kate Sowers shot a 76 to lead the Reds to a second-place finish with 309 strokes.

Conneaut Area (334) finished third and Grove City (343) was fourth. Reynolds only had two golfers, but Zoe Stern fired a 75.

Hickory: Masters 74, Liburdi 79, Petrochko 81.

Region 2 Mega-Match

Coach Dennis Ranker’s Grove City linksters captured the program’s fifth straight Region 2 championship on Monday with a win at Tanglewood Golf Course in Pulaski.

Tyler Hamilton shot a 78 and Ethan Cunningham carded a 79 to lead the way for the Eagles. Grove City will compete for the District 10 team title on Sept. 30 at The Country Club of Meadville.

West Middlesex (340) finished second followed by Slippery Rock (351), Wilmington (358), Sharon (395), and Sharpsville (441).

• Slippery Rock 6, Wilmington 1 — At New Wilmington, Hannah Plunkard fired in four goals to power the Region 2 Rockets past the Hounds of Region 1.

Aiva Reich and Ella Thimons had the other goals for Slippery Rock. Emma Hays and Calley Wolinski had assists.

Sarah Dieter scored on a breakaway to give Wilmington an early 1-0 lead before the Rockets rallied. Paige Buckwalter assisted on Dieter’s goal.

Ava Daugherty was the winning goaltender for Slippery Rock. Taylor Kendall (12 saves) suffered the loss for the Hounds (6-2).
