GROVE CITY — The Grove City College men’s basketball team opened the 2021-22 season Saturday afternoon with a 58-51 victory over visiting Penn State DuBois in non-conference action at the Grove City College Arena.

Grove City trailed 39-37 with 12:55 left but then held Penn State DuBois without a field goal for nearly 10 minutes. Grove City took the lead for good, 43-41, with nine minutes left when senior guard Ben Rose drilled a pair of free throws.

Sophomore forward Jon Weir followed with a layup and Rose hit two more free throws to give the Wolverines a 47-41 lead. A tip-in by junior guard Joshua McCray and a Rose basket capped the run.

Rose led Grove City with 17 points while Weir posted a career-high 10 points and seven rebounds.

Junior forward Elijah White pulled down eight rebounds to help the Wolverines own a 61-32 edge on the glass. Rose added six rebounds, along with five assists.

Women’s basketballERIE — The Grove City College women’s basketball team dropped an 85-65 decision Saturday afternoon at Penn State Behrend in the championship game of the Penn State Behrend Tip-Off Tournament, held at the Junker Center.

Junior guard Megan Kallock fired in a career-high 17 points to help pace Grove City (1-1) while senior forward Allison Podkul poured in 16 points on 7-of-12 shooting. Freshman guard Mara Polczynski tossed in 10 points for the Wolverines.

Grove City shot 33 percent (27 of 81) from the field in the game while Behrend (3-1) went 32 of 67 (48 percent). The Lions also drained 9 of 16 three-point attempts.

Junior center Nina Cano (Greenville High) hauled in a team-high seven rebounds and Polczynski recorded six rebounds.

All-Tournament Team selection Podkul dished out three assists.

Men’s cross country

NEWVILLE, Pa. — The Grove City College men’s cross country team concluded the 2021 season Saturday by placing 17th out of 36 teams at the NCAA Division III Mid-Atlantic Regional Championships, hosted by Dickinson College. The Wolverines finished the meet with 461 team points.

Five freshmen comprised Grove City’s seven-man lineup at the event. Freshman Jonah DeWitt led Grove City by taking 62nd place overall. He completed the eight-kilometer course in a time of 28 minutes, 41.4 seconds.

Senior Nathan Warrick earned 82nd in 29:03.8 while classmate Noah Callinan placed 97th with a time of 29:26.3.

Freshman Alex Hemmerlin (Grove City High) captured 107th place in 29:35.8 while freshman Max Thomas finished 118th (30:01.9).

Freshman Ben Raduns took 122nd (30:08.5) and fellow rookie Nathan Striebel finished 132nd with a time of 30:23.5.

Women’s cross countryNEWVILLE, Pa. — Led by All-Region performer Lydia Bennett, the Grove City College women’s cross country team placed 15th out of 38 teams Saturday afternoon at the NCAA Division III Mid-Atlantic Region Championships, hosted by Dickinson College. Grove City finished the meet with 425 points.

A freshman, Bennett closed her rookie season by placing 28th overall with a time of 24 minutes, 37.9 seconds. By placing in the top 35, Bennett earns All-Mid-Atlantic honors.

Freshman Emma Fiscus placed 83rd in a time of 25:56.0 on the 6,000-meter course while classmate Julia Bauer earned 92nd place (26:08.8). Freshman Sabrina Bergey placed 109th in a time of 26:47.6.

Junior Abby Biddle (Grove City High) finished as Grove City’s No. 5 runner with a time of 27:10.3. She captured 126th. Freshman Kaylynn Johnson finished 129th with a 27:17.8 clocking. Junior Eliz Slabaugh rounded out the lineup by coming in 133rd place (27:30.8).

Women’s swimming and diving

GROVE CITY — The Grove City College women’s swimming and diving team opened its Presidents’ Athletic Conference schedule Saturday afternoon with a 167-117 win over visiting Saint Vincent.

Sophomore Liz Hasse helped lead Grove City (2-1-1, 1-0 PAC) by recording three individual victories. Hasse won the 50 free in 25.03 seconds and then took the 100 free in 54.47 seconds. Hasse also posted a winning time of 2:00.68 in the 200 freestyle.

Junior Rachael Wallace swept the butterfly for the Wolverines. She won the 100 fly in 59.61 seconds and posted a time of 2:12.34 in the 200 butterfly.

Wallace, Hasse, junior Rachel Grubbs and senior Jenny Baglia (Grove City High) opened the meet by winning the 200 medley relay in a time of 1:50.47. Baglia added a win in the 100 breaststroke (1:10.71).

Freshman diver Kamryn Kerr won 1-meter diving with a score of 217.25 points.

Men’s swimming and diving

GROVE CITY — The Grove City College men’s swimming and diving team opened its home and Presidents’ Athletic Conference schedules Saturday by picking up a 138-75 victory over Saint Vincent.

Grove City performers earned 13 victories Saturday, including wins in both relay events. Senior Noah Berkebile, junior Elias Griffin, senior Will Hannon (Grove City High) and freshman Owen Schulze opened the meet by winning the 200 medley relay in 1 minute, 38.93 seconds.

Hannon, junior Mac Hancock, senior Gavin Grove and senior Peter Millar closed the meet by winning the 200 free relay in 1:29.70.

Berkebile also swept the backstroke for Grove City. He won the 100 back in 56.04 seconds, then posted a winning time of 2:05.29 in the 200 backstroke. Griffin won the 100 breaststroke (58.47) and the 200 breaststroke (2:13.25) while Schulze added wins in the 50 free (22.54) and 200 free (1:50.89).

Freshman Paul Braun won the 100 freestyle in 49.08 and later added a win in the 500 (5:17.55). Hannon won the 200 fly (2:08.08) and senior Joey Astrab won the 100 butterfly (55.41).

Senior Ryan Klemmer took first in the 1000 with a time of 11:01.23.
