GROVE CITY — With Christmas falling in mid-week this year, Grove City Area School Board is set to decide Monday whether to give students the entire week off, or have an early dismissal day on Dec. 23.
The board is likely to vote on the 2019-20 calendar at its meeting Monday, after Assistant Superintendent Dr. Joshua Weaver presented two options at the district’s work session this week.
Under both options, Monday, Aug. 26, would be the first day for students, with teachers’ in-service days Tuesday, Aug. 20, to Thursday, Aug. 22, and the students’ last day would be May 29, 2020.
Board members will have a choice on whether to begin Christmas break on Monday, Dec. 23, or have a half day on Dec. 23 and begin break on Christmas Eve.
Weaver said he preferred the first option, because having a half-day immediately before break would not be effective from an instructional standpoint.
“We don’t feel it sets the right tone,” Weaver said of the half day.
Both options bring students back on Jan. 2, 2020, after Christmas break. With Jan. 3 falling on a Friday, it wouldn’t make sense to bring students back to school for just one day after extending the break through Jan. 2, as the district did this year.
The calendar also includes days off during the second semester of 2019-2020 on Feb. 14 and 17, March 13 and May 25. Those four days can be used as weather-cancellation makeup days if needed.
Easter break would begin Friday, April 10, and continue through April 13, 2020.
