Guthrie to host Veritas Film Festival this weekend

GROVE CITY – The second annual Veritas Film Festival will be held at the Guthrie Theatre in Grove City this weekend.

The festival was initially scheduled for earlier this year as a week-long event but was postponed because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The event will showcase winners in multiple categories. Hundreds of entries were submitted from all over the world, according to a news release.

Awards were determined by a jury of film critics, film school professors, and filmmakers and a combination of the two to select the best film in each category.

They are: Feature Films; Student Films; Hard Faith; Made in Pa.; Documentaries; Screenplays; and Short Films.

The festival is expected to bring many special guests and art patrons from all over the world to Grove City.

Each of the 21 winners will receive custom awards. A special lifetime Hard Faith achievement award will go to Oscar-winning director and writer Paul Schrader for his body of work.

The goal of the weekend is to celebrate “truth and beauty through film,” according to Festival Director Spencer T. Folmar, a Pennsylvania native and graduate of Grove City College.

He is most looking forward to finally being able to show the award-winning filmmakers on the big screen.

They are being given the opportunity to share their work with an audience “hungry for stories with impact,” he said.

Festival attendees will be able to come and go for any and all films showing throughout the day beginning at 5 p.m. Dec. 11 and then from noon to 10 p.m. Dec. 12.

There will also be discussions and guest speakers.

The “Made in Pa.” and “Hard Faith” categories are near and dear to Folmar because he grew up in Pennsylvania; he loves showing off the state’s beauty and culture and promoting the prospect of filming in Pennsylvania.

Folmar said he invented and trademarked “Hard Faith,” and he’s made several films in the genre, including “Generational Sins” and the “Shooting Heroin,” which was screened in Grove City last year and has garnered numerous awards at film festivals throughout the country.

VIP Dinner tickets are still being sold. They include dinner catered by Esculent Catering and VIP balcony seating.
