COVID-19 canceled a popular car cruise last summer, but the event is back this year and with a different setup.
The Classic Croozers Grove City Auto Club is hosting Rumble in the Streets on June 5, when participants will drive through several towns in Butler and Mercer counties.
“We’re expecting over 300 cars,” said Dan Karns, a member of the club.
In previous years, the club held Rumble in the Park at Grove City Memorial Park. Large crowds check out the cars on display, which would not have been feasible several months into the pandemic.
This year’s rumble will give people a chance to enjoy a car cruise of sorts while still being able to practice social distancing, Karns said.
It also serves as a fundraiser for Grove City Area Meals on Wheels. There is no registration fee, but donations will be accepted.
“Every penny that is raised that day will go to Meals on Wheels,” he said, adding that raffle ticket sales will also be donated.
Motorists following the designated route do not have to be members of the club, and they do not have to drive a classic car.
Some folks are bringing newer cars like Challengers, Camaros and Chargers.
“It’s a good group of people,” he said.
The event starts and ends at Hovis Auto and Truck Supply Distribution Center, 1000 Champion Drive, Springfield Township, rain or shine.
People can show up starting at 4 p.m., and there will be food trucks and music before and after the cruise.
Be prepared to hit the road at 5 p.m. The cruise will leave Hovis heading east on state Route 208 through Grove City, then turn right onto state Route 8 south toward Harrisville.
Continue on Route 8 south and turn right onto state Route 173 north near the Old Stone House, then head through Slippery Rock on state Route 258.
When you reach Route 208 by the outlet mall, turn left onto 208 west and return to Hovis.
Participants, who will get a decal are welcome to be part of the car show that will follow the drive. COVID-19 safety protocols will be observed, though face masks will not be required.
The evening wraps up with oldies music, and food trucks selling gourmet grilled cheese, tacos and cupcakes.
And those who live along the cruise route can check it out as it drives by, Karns said.
The event is sponsored by Turner Insurance.
