Students, residents partner to 'Polish the Rock'
Slippery Rock University students and borough residents are partnering to “Polish the Rock.”
The clean-up effort will begin with a rally on campus at 8:30 a.m. Oct. 27 and will move out into the community neighborhoods. The cleanup project is expected to last until noon. A luncheon will be at the fire department on Elm Street for volunteers. Borough residents are asked to bring food to share.
Student organizations, community groups, local businesses and distinguished leaders will adopt streets in Slippery Rock and will be responsible for cleaning them. This clean-up will be the first of an ongoing program. It is hoped that there will be a minimum of four clean-up efforts a year.
Community leaders or “Rock Captains” will be responsible for finding the work that needs completed on each designated block. They will communicate the information to the university volunteer leaders or “Polish Captains,” who will carry out the tasks.
The Institute for Community, Service-Learning and Nonprofit Leadership is coordinating the project, and collaborating with Mayor Kenneth Harris, Tom McPherson and Sigma Tau Gamma, Slippery Rock Borough Council and many residents to plan the event.
Clean-up materials and donations for street signage are currently being accepted and should be sent to: The Robert A. Lowry Center, Slippery Rock University, Slippery Rock 16057.
