Variety of hikes planned at Jennings this summer
Summer is in full swing and it is time to head outdoors. Jennings Environmental Education Center in Slippery Rock offers a variety of guided hikes for a range of abilities.
Get up and get out on Saturday mornings with your family for a morning hike. Hikes begin at 10 a.m. at the center, will last about an hour and a half and will cover less than one mile. Hikes are:
ä Aug. 11, For the Dogs: A Hike with Your Canine Companion
ä Aug. 18, From Local History to Natural History: The Jennings Story
ä Aug. 25, Hooray for Herps! Pennsylvania’s Amphibians and Reptiles
Also, Jennings invites the community to walk its prairies as they burst into summer bloom. A guided 90-minute walk will take place at 2 p.m. Aug. 5, beginning in the prairie parking area.
The small prairie is one of the few remaining pockets of a once greater extension of the true Midwestern prairie. The Jennings area was established in the late 1950s to conserve a beautiful prairie flower, the blazing star.
The walk will feature discussion of the plants, animals, history and geology of the prairie. The area is hot and has little shade; please dress appropriately.
For information about a specific hike, call 724-794-6011.
