HIGH SCHOOL FALL SPORTS ROUNDUP

MERCER COUNTY AREA — Slippery Rock and Lakeview teams will compete in the 23rd annual Big Red Cross Country Invitational today in West Middlesex.

The 34-team event will begin at 9 a.m. with girls’ and boys’ middle-school races, followed incrementally by varsity girls’ and boys’ races in two distinct PIAA enrollment classifications. Junior varsity girls’ and boys’ races will conclude the 1,185-competitor event.

Varsity races (by enrollment) will include:

GIRLS

Red Division: New Castle, Knoch, Oil City, Conneaut Area, Hickory, Ellwood City, Slippery Rock, Franklin, Titusville, Girard, Riverside, Sharon, Greenville, North East, Wilmington, Laurel, Cranberry.

White Division: Cambridge Springs, Lakeview, Maplewood, Neshannock, Sharpsville, West Middlesex, Union City, Reynolds, Youngsville, Rocky Grove, Cochranton, Union Twp., Kennedy Catholic, Commodore Perry, Jamestown, Tidioute Charter.

BOYS

Numerous high school fall sports competitions were held involving Allied News area teams recently. Following are those reported to The Herald and Allied News:

GIRLS TENNIS

The Hickory girls tennis team improved to 7-0 in Region 1 and 7-1 overall on Thursday with a 5-0 sweep of the Grove City Lady Eagles (3-4, 3-4) in Hermitage.

Rachel Mettee, Lauren McGonigle and Anna Derloni swept singles play for the Lady Hornets while the teams of Nikki Marone-Bailey McLaughlin and Camille Testani-Annalise Bianco won the doubles matches.

Singles: Mettee (H) def. Claire Casalnova, 6-3, 6-2; McGonigle (H) def. Molly Somora, 6-2, 6-1; Derloni (H) def. Katie Kosick, 6-3, 6-3. Doubles: Marrone-McLaughlin (H) def. Maddie Jazwinski-Morgan McCommon, 6-2, 6-1; Testani-Bianco (H) def. Lauren Steele-Emily Krof-check, 6-3, 6-2.

ä Kennedy Catholic 3, Grove City 2 — At Grove City, Jensen Kirila, Bekah Kish and Abby Lenhart swept the singles matches as KC edged GC.

ä Grove City 5, Sharon 0 — At Grove City, the Lady Eagles improved to 3-2 with 5 straight-sets sweeps.

Doubles: Maddie Jazwinski-Morgan McCommon (GC) def. Lauren Wood-Natalie Liscio, 6-2, 6-2; Lauren Steele-Emily Krofcheck (GC) def. Erin Hosick-Monica Campbell, 6-0, 6-1.



BOYS GOLF

ä Kennedy Catholic 179, Mercer 184 — At Spring Valley Golf Course in Mercer, the Golden Eagles (4-0, 5-0) took over 1st place in Region 1 as they beat the Mustangs by 5 strokes.

KC’s Jacob Wilson and Mercer’s Nate Guiler shared medalist honors by shooting 39s.

Kennedy Catholic: Wilson 39, Paul Spondike 44, Jesse Kirila 45, Teddy Haaz 51. Mercer: Guiler 39, Mark Peters 47, Brock Watson, Matt Mathias, Ian Ollila, Landen Glass 49s.

Region 3 Mega-Match

Grove City finished 4th with 343 points Tuesday at Blueberry Hill Golf Course in Warren, Pa. Meadville won with 322, followed by Warren (323), Slippery Rock (330), Grove City and Oil City (365).

Warren’s Nathan Sandberg fired a 74 to earn medalist honors. Matt Gordon carded a 75 to lead GC and Slippery Rock was paced by Matt Badger and Mitchell May, who shot 81s.

Meadville: Charlie Holt 77, Dalton Zelasco 78, Kyle Luben 82, Matt Burchard 85. Warren: Sandberg 74, Andrew Gignac 76, Anthony Deppas 85, Austin Schwanke 88. SR: Badger, May 81s, Sam Isacco 82, Collin Hyatt 86. GC: Gordon 75, Kyle Shingledecker 86, Jordan Anderson 88, Justin Fulkerson 94. OC: Troy McGregor 89, Jeremy Watson, Andrew Pikna 91s, Colton Schneider 93.

Meadville leads the region standings with 19 points, Slippery Rock has 14, Warren 12, Grove City 11 and Oil City 4.

GC faces Neshannock in a dual-match Monday at Castle Hills Golf Club in New Castle and then competes in the next Region 3 Mega-Match on Tuesday at Wanango Golf Course in Oil City.

ä Lakeview 190, Green-ville 190 — At The Greens of Greenville, coach Ralph Sundelin’s Sailors (2-3) beat the Trojans on 1st medalist score. Chris Palutro shot a 41 for Lakeview;e Nick Dietrich 43 for Greenville.

Lakeview: Palutro 41, Keith Kepner 46, Sean Carlson 51, Austin Milliren 52. Greenville: Dietrich 43, Brandon Beilstein 46, Colton McCright 49, Luke Seiver 52.



GIRLS SOCCER

ä Grove City 9, Sharps-ville 0 — At Forker Field Wednesday, Kalie Davis was first to score off a cross from right midfielder Julie DiStasi and added 2 more 1st-half goals, assisted by Holly McGill on one. 

Anna Williams also scored 3 goals in the half, on a penalty kick and assists from Aubri McCoy and DiStasi.

First goal of the 2nd half came from Brittany Mattson on a pass from Abby Fulkerson. Mattson then hammered in a penalty kick. Davis once again found the net to complete the scoring for the Eagles, while Grove City goalkeeper Olivia Andrews pitched the shutout.



GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

ä West Middlesex 3, Mercer 0 — At Mercer Thursday, Megan Hazlett registered 8 points (6 aces), 32 assists and 6 digs in leading coach Niki Nych’s Ms. Reds (2-0) to a 25-13, 25-14, 25-23 sweep of the Lady M’s (1-1).

West Middlesex: Tori Roberts 5 points, 17 digs; Aly

Andrusky 10 points, 5 kills; Arieal Pratt 5 points, 7 kills, 6 digs; Dani Krepps 6 digs; Marissa Pursel 5 points, 14 kills. Mercer: Maddie Hessman 9 points; Lindsey Miller 8 points, 5 blocks, 5 kills; Nikki Redmond 6 points, 7 digs; Taylor Moon 7 points; Alyssa Shoemaker 12 points, 9 digs, 6 assists.

JV: WM, 26-24, 25-20.

ä Mercer 3, Reynolds — At Transfer, the visiting Lady M’s mustered a 25-20, 25-21, 25-23 sweep.

Mercer: Maddie Hessman 11 points; Lindsey Miller 18 points; Nikki Redmond 13 points (6 aces), 5 digs, 5 kills; Taylor Moon 11 points; Melissa Shoemaker 13 points (5 aces), 15 assists; Kaitlyn Nemeth 9 points, 6 digs. Reynolds: No stats reported.

GIRLS GOLF

Region 1 Mega-Match

Hickory made it 4-for-4 on Wednesday as it captured the Region 1 Mega-Match at Deer Creek Golf Course. Hickory shot a 188, Reynolds fired a 197, West Middlesex had a 201 and only 3 girls from Rocky Grove competed.

Abby Hearns led the way for the Lady Hornets with a 43. Reynolds’ Izzy Schell and Taylor Yahner both shot 46s and Becca Fithian carded a 44 for WM.

A pair of Grove City golfers competed as independents. Fontaine McFeaters fired the low score of the day with a 39 and Meg Birmingham shot a 44.



BOYS SOCCER

ä Freeport 3, Slippery Rock 1 — The Rockets recently dropped a tough match to the WPIAL club, falling behind 2-1 in the first half. The lone goal for the locals was by Mark Cessar, while goalie Jason Bluedorn had 5 saves.

In the recent Hempfield Tournament, Slippery Rock went 2-1. They defeated Steel Valley, 1-0, on a goal by Josh Stutz and assist by Luc LaChance. They defeated Waynesburg, 2-1, jwith goals by Nick Stutz, assist by Josh Stutz, and LaChance unassisted. Bluedorn had 2 saves. The loss came 8-0 to powerful Pittsburgh Central Catholic. Bluedorn had 13 saves and Sean Beeching 4.



BOYS CROSS COUNTRY

ä Slippery Rock 23, Rey-nolds 36 — At Slippery Rock, the host Rockets rolled behind winner Andrew Maxwell,  who  copped  a 68-

second win over Reynolds runner-up Justin Pago.

ä Lakeview 15, Mercer 50 (forfeit) — At Brandy Springs Park in Mercer, the Mustangs did not field a full team. Alex Miller (19:11), Robbie Stringer and Chris Drozynski placed 1-2-3 for the Sailors.



GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY

ä Slippery Rock 15, Rey-nolds 50 (forfeit) — Slippery Rock was led by Tabitha Donaldson (23:51); Reynolds did not field a full squad.

ä Lakeview 23, Mercer 33 — At Mercer, Andrea McConnell clocked in at 22:59 to finish 1st overall for Lakeview. Jamie Burdette took 2nd for the Lady M’s.
