HIGH SCHOOL SPRING SPORTS ROUNDUP: County track set today at Hickory

MERCER COUNTY AREA — The annual Mercer County Track & Field Invitational will be held at Hickory High’s Hornet Stadium today, beginning at 9 a.m.

Competing are all Mercer County teams, Class AAA and AA, as well as Slippery Rock. The meet serves as a warm-up to the District 10 championships set next week at Harbor Creek High.

Following are the top seeds in each event according to season performances:

BOYS

4x800 relay—Grove City (Ian Brown, Daniel Jaskowak, Ryan Whiteman, John Scott Somora, Dillon McConnell); 110 hurdles—Kyle Trinch (Grove City); 100—Clay Allen (West Middlesex); 1600—Kevin Reno (Mercer); 400—Tyler Confer (Sharpsville); 4x100 relay—West Middlesex (Sebastian Grasso, Jeremy Jancso, Luke Patten, Allen, Joe Trippy, Austin Mirizio); 300 hurdles—Trinch; 800—Jaskowak; 200—Allen; 3200—Ryan Budnik (Grove City); 4x400 relay—Lakeview (Connor Stankovich, Zach Van Dusen, Billy Kinsey, Blake Reddick, Robbie Stringer, Devon Workman); Long jump—Jancso; Triple jump—Jon Jacoway (Sharon); High jump—Jacoway; Shot put—Jon Yohman (Wilmington); Discus—Yohman; Javelin—Matt Voytik (Hickory); Pole vault—Patten.

GIRLS

SOFTBALL

ä Wilmington 13, Lakeview 0 (5 inn.) — At Stoneboro, Wilmington winning pitcher Abby Sotter silenced the Lady Sailors on just 2 singles. She struck out 7 and walked 1, and 45 of the 73 pitches she threw went for strikes.

Cassidy Marett, Lexi Donati and Alanna Elliot ended with 2 hits apiece for Wilmington, and each drove home a pair of runs for the Lady Hounds. Donati drilled a triple and home run, and Courtney Cohen and Marett drilled doubles, Marett muscled a triple, as did Elliot for Region 2-AA titlist Wilmington (6-1, 14-2).

Losing Lakeview pitcher K.Mahen gave up 11 hits, but was victimized the 3 Sailors’ errors. She and K.McClelland had the lone Sailors’ singles.

ä Hickory 12, Grove City 6 — At Memorial Park, Grove City, the visiting LadyHornets’ Morgan McBride hammered a pair of home runs. McBride drove in 3 runs with 3 hits, while Danielle Collier collected 3 hits, as did Courtney Maniscalco. Also, Anna Abate added a single, double and 3 ribbies for Hickory (7-2 region, 10-2 overall).

Lauren Kizak KO’d 4 in 4 frames in which she permitted 6 runs on 6 hits and 3 runs, while Chelsey Marriott mowed down Grove City in the 5th, 6th and 7th on just 2 hits. She whiffed 2 and did not walk a batter for 1st-year coach Tanya McClafferty.

Belle Chiodi (4 innings, 8 hits 2 KOs, no walks), Cassie Feather and Maddie Elberty pitched for Grove City.

Jordan Hesselgesser, 2 hits, Taylor Shingledecker ,single, double, and Katie Maine, 3-run double, led the Lady Eagles (4-12) offense.

  • THE CHECKERED FLAG: Up and down week for Sodeman

    LAST FRIDAY I headed south to add I-77 Raceway Park to my track attended list, which made for 162nd track all-time.  I-77 is located south of Ripley, West Virginia just off Interstate 77.  This season, I-77 moved from the crowded Saturday night line-up to Friday night racing and teamed up with Ohio Valley Speedway.  I-77 normally runs Super Late Models, Semi-Late Models, E-Mods, Mod Lites, and 4-Cylinder Mini Stocks.  With the Sprint Cars on the schedule, I decided to make the trip and they were joined by the Super Late Models, Semi-Late Models, and E-Mods.

  • THE CHECKERED FLAG: Blaney still running hot on area tracks

    LAST THURSDAY I headed southwest to Atomic Speedway, formerly known as KC Raceway.  The 1/3-mile high-banked dirt oval is located an hour south of Columbus, Ohio just off Route 23 near Alma.  It was my first visit in a couple years.  A big crowd turned out on Independence Day Eve as the All Star Circuit of Champions Sprint Cars were back along with the Super Late Models and E-Mods.  The Ohio Speedweek event the week before drew a huge 62-car field and Thursday’s event drew 33.
    After an astounding Speedweek winning the final three races and four of six, Dale Blaney returned to the track that he last got defeated at.  On the Speedweek show, Jac Haudenschild made the winning pass of Blaney, while Blaney finished second.  Last Thursday, even a seventh starting spot didn’t derail Blaney for long.  The Hartford, Ohio racer worked his way to the front and made the winning pass of race-long leader Tim Shaffer on lap 16.  One caution three laps from the finish was all that slowed Blaney’s run to another $5,000 payday.  It was Blaney’s fourth straight win, sixth of the season, and all-time leading 105th of his career with the All Stars.

  • EXTRA INNINGS: Bucs fans loved Burnett, but let's leave him in Philly

    THERE IS NO no doubt that A.J. Burnett made a huge impact during his two seasons with the Pirates.
    When he arrived in the spring of 2012, so did hope for fans wearied by teams that hadn’t seen a winning record in 20 summers.
    While he certainly did not turn the tide by himself, he turned the wheel. His swagger sometimes didn’t play well with management, but even the Buc brass had to appreciate the new culture that Burnett helped his teammates create.
