MERCER COUNTY AREA — ä Lakeview 3, Farrell 1 — At E.J. McCluskey Gymnasium, the visiting Lady Sailors (5-3) coasted to a 25-19, 19-25, 25-15, 25-17 win over the Lady Steelers (3-6).

Farrell: Johntae Scott 9 digs; Keysia Oatis 8 kills; Alicia Jackson 8 kills; Whitney Murray 6 kills; Domoniq Savage 6 assists; Jasmine Pegues 6 assists; Jakayla Samuels 5 serving aces. ä Grove City 15, Hickory 47 — At Grove City, Dan Jaskowak cruised to a 1st-place finish in 16 minutes flat as the Eagles remained unbeaten.

Logan Griffen took 6th (17:29) for Hickory (4-1).

ä Slippery Rock 25, Sharon 30 — At Buhl Farm Park, Sharon’s (0-5) Cody Buchanan won in a time of 17:42, but the Rockets’ runners prevailed, led by runner-up Caleb Bickel.

ä West Middlesex 15, Mercer 50 (forfeit) — At Mercer, the Mustangs did not field a full team. Mercer’s Kevin Reno took 1st in 17:26, while Levi Canon clocked in 2nd at 17:41 for WM (4-0, 7-0).

ä Lakeview 18, James-town 45 — At Jamestown, Devon Workman (18:05) and Billy Kinsey (18:15) finished 1-2 as the Sailors beat the Muskies. Christian McElhaney took 3rd for Jamestown in 18:23.


ä West Middlesex 15, Mercer 50 — At Mercer, the Ms. Reds improved to 4-0 in the region, 7-0 overall with the win. Chloé Tyillian finished 1st for WM in a time of 20:50.

Mercer did not have a runner finish in the top 10.

ä Grove City 27, Hickory 30 — At Grove City, Lexi Bible (19:48) clocked in 1st for Hickory (4-1) and Hannah Sanford was 2nd for the Lady Eagles in 20:11 in a competitive dual meet.

ä Sharon 22, Slippery Rock 33 — At Buhl Frm Park, Slippery Rock’s Lauren Dietz won in a time of 23:20; however, Delaney Ser, Zhanea Davis and Julia Foltz finished 2-3-4 for Sharon (1-4).

  • On to baseball GC coach Bell retired — sort of!

    You can take the man out of coaching, but you can’t take coaching out of the man.
    Former Grove City High football coach Jeff Bell has spent his first few months of retirement hearing the ping of a baseball ricocheting off an aluminum bat instead of clap of shoulder pads coming together.
    “My grandson Maddox (Bell) and a few of his friends play on a traveling team, so I’m helping out with that,” said Bell, who retired as the Eagles’ football coach this past winter. “They’re a good group of kids to work with and this is a lot more enjoyable. It’s a lot less stress.

    HERE I THOUGHT, we were going to make it through an offseason without a Pittsburgh Steeler getting in trouble for something stupid.
    Thanks Maurkice Pouncey for allowing that to not happen.

  • EXTRA INNINGS: Forget trade deadline, focus on signing Martin

    WHILE BASEBALL fans are focused on tomorrow’s 4 p.m. EDT non-waiver trade deadline, there is an issue that is even more pressing for the Pirates: re-signing catcher Russell Martin, eligible for free agency after the 2014 season.
    Andrew McCutcheon is the team’s most valuable player, but Martin is the most valuable TO the Pirates. It is no coincidence that the Pirates’ return to the postseason last year occurred in Martin’s first year with the Bucs.
