HIGH SCHOOL FALL SPORTS: GC girls win Buhl Farm Tennis Invitational



ä Hickory 4, Slippery Rock 1 — At Slippery Rock, M.K. Bair and Isabella Spadafora had 2 goals each for the Lady Hornets (9-1). Jackie White and Sara Suler had assists and Morgan McBride made 14 saves in goal. Anne McGowan was cited for making a great defensive play.

JV: 0-0.

ä Mercer 1, Wilmington 0 — Under the lights at New Wilmington, Megan Lang posted the only goal of the game as the Lady M’s improved to 4-0-1 in Region 1 and 5-3-1 overall.

Megan McKinney assisted on the goal. Analise Whenry posted 9 saves between the pipes to earn the shutout.

ä Mercer 3, Kennedy Catholic 1 — At Butala Stadium, Hermitage, Megan McKinney had 2 goals and an assist as the Lady M’s (6-3-1) topped KC (2-4).

Lexie Arkwright had the other goal for Mercer and Sarah Stevens was credited with an assist. Analise Whenry posted 5 saves in goal for the Lady M’s.

Stacy Goclano scored for KC off an assist from Tawney Godfrey. Shelby McElhinny notched 10 saves between the pipes.

In Wednesday’s edition, Hickory scorekeeper Anne McGowan was credited with “strong defensive play” in a 4-1 win vs. Slippery Rock. The player was Mackenzie Gruber.

ä Hickory 2, Grove City 1 — At Forker Field, Grove City, Sara Suler and Jackie White garnered goals for the visiting Lady Hornets.

Also, Bella Spadafora assisted on a score and goalkeeper Casey Zreliak made 10 saves. Kate Davis garnered Grove City’s goal, which gave it a 1-0 margin at intermission.

˝ In a recent edition, MacKenzie Gruber was cited for her strong defensive play. She was misidentified as Anne McGowan.


ä Grove City 3, Hickory 2 — At Hermitage, the visiting Lady Eagles’ Meredith Trent, Abby Casalnova and Reba Duran swept singles action in straight sets. Both teams are 11-2.

  • On to baseball GC coach Bell retired — sort of!

    You can take the man out of coaching, but you can’t take coaching out of the man.
    Former Grove City High football coach Jeff Bell has spent his first few months of retirement hearing the ping of a baseball ricocheting off an aluminum bat instead of clap of shoulder pads coming together.
    “My grandson Maddox (Bell) and a few of his friends play on a traveling team, so I’m helping out with that,” said Bell, who retired as the Eagles’ football coach this past winter. “They’re a good group of kids to work with and this is a lot more enjoyable. It’s a lot less stress.

    HERE I THOUGHT, we were going to make it through an offseason without a Pittsburgh Steeler getting in trouble for something stupid.
    Thanks Maurkice Pouncey for allowing that to not happen.

  • EXTRA INNINGS: Forget trade deadline, focus on signing Martin

    WHILE BASEBALL fans are focused on tomorrow’s 4 p.m. EDT non-waiver trade deadline, there is an issue that is even more pressing for the Pirates: re-signing catcher Russell Martin, eligible for free agency after the 2014 season.
    Andrew McCutcheon is the team’s most valuable player, but Martin is the most valuable TO the Pirates. It is no coincidence that the Pirates’ return to the postseason last year occurred in Martin’s first year with the Bucs.
