HIGH SCHOOL FALL SPORTS: GC girls win Buhl Farm Tennis Invitational



Led by the 1-2 placement of Conner Gray and Tommy Dimon, Butler won the 30th annual Tam O’Shanter High School Golf Invitational.

Gray garnered medalist honors as he shot 73, a total matched by Dimon. They boosted Butler to a 317 team total, a scant stroke better than Shenango (318) and 2 better than Meadville (319) in the 29-team field.

The remainder of the individual top 10 included: John Fusco (Strong Vincent), 75; Mike Macairello (New Castle), Zach Ford (Meadville), Chris Kupniewski (Strong Vincent) and Ryan Dugan (New Castle), 77s, and Gino Baroffio (Butler) and Sharon’s Jack Evans, 78.

Following Butler, Shenango and MASH in the team standings were: Strong Vincent (322), Laurel (330), Grove City (336), Neshannock (340), Greenville and Reynolds (343), McDowell (344), Riverside (347), New Castle, Union and Corry (350), Elk County Catholic (351), Cathedral Prep (353), Kennedy Catholic (355), Mercyhurst Prep (356), Sharon (359), Lakeview (374), Mercer (375), Franklin (379), West Middlesex-Red (382), North East (386), Fairview (388), Ellwood City-Lincoln (393), Titusville (397), Union City (408) and West Middlesex-White (440).

Region 1 Mega-Match

Hickory captured its 2nd straight and 6th overall region title by rolling to victory in the final Mega-Match of the season at Lucky Hills Golf Course in Franklin.

Hickory shot a 175, Reynolds carded a 216 and Rocky Grove had a 242.

Rosy Hearns fired a 37 to lead Hickory. She finished with the top average in the region with a 37.6, reported coach Craig Antush. Alena Lancia, Kelsey Dudash and Abby Hearns all shot 46 for the Lady Hornets.

Marie Clark and Izzy Schell carded 52s for Reynolds, while Jamie Vamosi fired  a 53  and  Taylor Yahner added a 59.

Grove City independent Meg Birmingham shot 64.

Hickory battles Mercyhurst Prep at 10 a.m. today for the District 10 2-A team championship at Riverside Golf Course in Cambridge Springs.

  • On to baseball GC coach Bell retired — sort of!

    You can take the man out of coaching, but you can’t take coaching out of the man.
    Former Grove City High football coach Jeff Bell has spent his first few months of retirement hearing the ping of a baseball ricocheting off an aluminum bat instead of clap of shoulder pads coming together.
    “My grandson Maddox (Bell) and a few of his friends play on a traveling team, so I’m helping out with that,” said Bell, who retired as the Eagles’ football coach this past winter. “They’re a good group of kids to work with and this is a lot more enjoyable. It’s a lot less stress.
