HIGH SCHOOL FALL SPORTS: Golfers qualify for districts

MERCER COUNTY AREA — Led by Mercer High’s Nate Guiler, 9 Region 1 golfers qualified for the upcoming District 10 Championships, Oct. 9 at Grove City Country Club.

At Tam O’Shanter Golf Course on Wednesday, Guiler garnered a medalist round of 81.

Guiler was followed by Jamestown’s Ronnie Meals and Greenville’s Daniel Addison, 82; Greenville’s Kendal King and Kennedy Catholic’s Jacob Wilson, 83; Jamestown’s Keamus Schuhlen and Greenville’s Bryar Wentling, 84, and Greenville’s Chad Ferguson and Lakeview’s Casey Greggs, 85. Lakeview’s Sam Magargee’s 86 earned him a berth as an alternate.

The remainder of Wednesday’s field included: Nick Deitrich (Greenville) and Ryan Sherbondy and Wes McDonald (Reynolds), 87; John McGonigle (Kennedy Catholic) and Travis Reese (Reynolds), 88; Jake Reaugh (Jamestown), 89; Paul Spondike (Kennedy Catholic), and Jacob Reimold and Zack Taylor (Reynolds), 90; Teddy Haaz (Kennedy Catholic) and Peter Timashenka (Mercer), 93;

Mark Peters (Mercer) 94; Jonas Reaugh (Jamestown), 95; Colton McCright (Greenville), 97, and Keith Kepner (Lakeview), 103.

GIRLS TENNIS

Tournament director Sue McLaughlin announced the 15th annual Buhl Farm Tennis Invitational will take place Oct. 3, beginning at 8:30 a.m. on Buhl Farm Park courts, Hermitage.

There will be 7 singles and doubles divisions contested by Greenville, Grove City, Hickory, Kennedy Catholic, Sharon, Wilmington, Oil City and Franklin.



BOYS SOCCER

ä Mercer 10, Commo-dore Perry 0 — At Sheakleyville, the visiting Mustangs (4-0 region, 8-1 overall) were led by Will Juergens and Trenton Fowler, both of whom tallied twice and assisted on 2 other scores.

Also for Mercer, Chase Hoffman had a goal and assist, Zack Kroll was credited with 3 assists, and Nathan Breese 1, Alex Shaffer 1, Matt Jergens, Ryan Carlson, and Preston Hoover contributed goals and Quinton Hinkson an assist.Mercer outshot the Panthers, 17-0.

BOYS SOCCER

ä Franklin 3, Grove City 1 — With Grove City (5-4) dominating field play on Tuesday, the Franklin Knights converted 60 percent of their shots on goal to defeat the Eagles Tuesday.

Colton Byers, Logan Mooney and Ty Mooney scored for the Knights. Alex Boarts scored for the Eagles.

Grove City registered 38 offensive attacks to 14 by Franklin. The Eagles had the edge in corner kicks (5-2) and shots-on-goal (10-5). Noah Jones made 8 saves for Franklin; Grove City goalie Jed Grimm stopped 2 shots.

ä Slippery Rock 1, Sharon 0 — On Tuesday at Tiger Stadium, Cole McCandless’ 1st-half goal, assisted by Aaron Gercken, accounted for the match’s lone score. Goalkeeper Zach Latorre made 3 saves for Slippery Rock; Vince Shaffer 4 for Sharon.

ä Kennedy Catholic 175, Mercer 189 — At Tam O’Shanter, the host Golden Eagles (5-5) squared their season slate, led by medalist Paul Spondike’s 40.

ä Grove City 167, Slippery Rock 167 — At Grove City Country Club, coach Pat Forese’s Eagles edged the Rockets on a 5th-score tiebreaker (Jordan Anderson 43). GC’s Dylan Osborne and SR’s Brett Rinker shared medalist honors with 40s.

ä Greenville 168, Lakeview 186 — At Pine Grove Golf Course’s par46 back nine, the visiting Trojans triumphed. Lakeview’s Sam Magargee was medalist, shooting 39, a scant stroke better than Greenville’s Bryar Wentling.

ä Mercer 1, West Middlesex 0 — On Monday at Lamor Road Field, Mercer, Megan McKinney mustered the match’s lone goal, while Analise Whenry recorded the shutout.

Mercer had 33 shots on goal; Middlesex 6.



ä Grove City 4, Titusville 0 — Under the lights at Forker Field Monday, Aubri McCoy posted 2 goals and Mariah Trieber and Grace Dudzah scored as the Lady Eagles (4-3) rolled past the Lady Rockets.

Grove City’s Olivia Andrews notched the shutout with 6 saves.



GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

ä Sharpsville 3, Lakeview 0 — At Stoneboro, the visiting Blue Darlings defeated Lakeview, 25-10, 25-15, 25-12.

ä Farrell 3, Jamestown 2 — At “The Fish Tank” in Jamestown, the Lady Steelers (3-2) rallied for a thrilling 20-25, 26-28, 25-16, 25-12, 15-11 win.

ä West Middlesex 25, Oil City 35; West Middlesex 19, Slippery Rock 44; Oil City 22, Slippery Rock 37 — At Oil City, the Big Reds notched a pair of wins. David Johnson took 3rd for WM. Gordon Phipps (17:51) and Austin King finished 1-2 for the Oilers. Caleb Bickel finished 4th for SR.

ä Grove City 16, Sharon 47 — At Grove City, the host Eagles ended with 4 of the top 6 placewinners, led by Daniel Jaskowak’s winning effort in 16:21.

˝ The Eagles ended 3rd in a 31-team AA field in a recent invitational in Hershey, led by winner Jaskowak (16:19). Also for Grove City, Aaron Benka (11th, 17:28), Ian Brown (34th, 18:10), Ryan Budnik (37th, 18:19), and Brandon Wise (42nd, 18:25).

GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY

ä West Middlesex 15, Oil City 49; West Middlesex 15, Slippery Rock 49; Oil City 27, Slippery Rock 30 — At Oil City, Kristen White clocked in at 21:52 to earn 1st place for the Ms. Reds. Slippery Rock’s Leuren Dietz placed 7th and Oil City’s Holly Hudson 8th.

ä Grove City 15, Sharon 50 — At Grove City, the host Lady Eagles eased to the top 5 berths, led by winner Hannah Sanford (20:40).

˝ The Lady Eagles ended 11th in their 27-team field at a recent invitational in Hershey. Grove City was led by Katie Jaskowak (31st, 21:22), Hannah Sanford (35th, 21:32), Lauren Decker (59th, 22:33), Maddie Hamilton (70th, 22:57) and Olivia Lowe (97th, 23:40).
