HIGH SCHOOL WINTER SPORTS ROUNDUP: Mercer girls top Lakeview

MERCER COUNTY AREA — GIRLS BASKETBALL

ä Mercer 61, Lakeview 21 — At Stoneboro Monday, the visiting Lady M’s mustered the Region 2-AA road rout. Mercer mounted a 41-12 margin at intermission.

For the Lady M’s (7-2, 14-5), Megan McKinney manufactured a game-high 21 markers and Adelyn Cook connected for a trio of treys en route to 15 points for her father, 2nd-year Mercer mentor Aaron Cook.

Leading Lakeview (1-9, 5-14) was Casey Stringer, who scored 10.



BOYS BASKETBALL

ä Central Tech 85, George Junior Republic 73 — At Grove City Monday, the Falcons led 23-18 after 8 minutes, 46-32 at halftime and went on to notch the non-region win over GJR (5-12).

Eugene Husband rifled in 32 points for Tech.

Dominic Barnes led GJR with 22 points, Quamere Boggs scored 17, Ron Pearson tallied 13 points and O’Shay Toney added 12.

ä Hickory 71, Grove City 49 — At “The Eagles Nest” in Grove City, the Hornets (10-1, 14-3) maintained their lead in Region 5-AAA by outscoring GC 21-15 in the 3rd quarter and 20-5 in the 4th.

Vinnie Mastrian rifled in 21 points to lead Hickory while Anthony Cannone registered 17 points, 5 rebounds and dished out 5 assists. Also, Donté Green had 12 points and Matt Votino added 11 markers.

Matt Thrasher led Grove City (2-10, 4-13) with 15 points and Danny Torok bucketed 14.

ä Meadville 66, George Junior Republic 49 — At “The House of Thrills” in Meadville Friday, Donté Hollingsworth rifled in 25 points as the host Bulldogs (8-4, 12-5) beat the Tigers (3-9, 5-11) in a Region 5-AAA clash.

Also for Meadville, Zak Price buried 4 treys en route to 15 points while Jason Clune added 11 markers.

Quamere Boggs fired in 17 points to pace GJR, Ron Pearson tallied a dozen and Malik Gibson contributed 10 markers.



ä Lakeview 66, Wilmington 40 — At Stoneboro Friday, the Sailors of coach Gary Burke continued their impressive march toward the playoffs with the Region 2-AA triumph.

Lakeview led 21-14 after one period and 36-24 at halftime. The Sailors extended the margin to  55-35 at the 4th quarter turn.

Casey Greggs pumped in 19 points and had 7 rebounds and 9 assists for Lakeview (8-1, 16-2). Dalton Boggs added 14 points, 8 assists and 4 steals, while Brandon Rice also tallied 14 points and Coty Gander 10.

For Wilmington (2-6, 5-12), Jordan Smith scored 14 points,while Nate Anthony added 12.

ä Mercer 66, Sharpsville 60 — At Sharpsville, the Mustangs pulled off an upset in a Region 2-AA clash that hampers the Blue Devils’ playoff hopes. The Mustangs rallied from behind in the final frame, outscoring the home team 21-13 for the victory.

The Mustangs (3-6, 6-11) were powered by Logan Clarke with 28 points, while Vik Rymniak added 13. Both were clutch at the charity stripe, with Clarke nailing 10 of 11 and Rymniak 9 of 10. Mercer had a huge margin at the foul line, canning 23 of 31, while Sharpsville made 3 of 5 attempts.

For Sharpsville (4-5, 10-7), Tyler Luchey hit 15 points, Taylor Lenzi 12 and Kyle Kennedy 11. 



WRESTLING

DISTRICT 10 DUALS

ä Greenville 38, Mercer 21 — At Sharon High Saturday, the Mustangs of coach Rick Whenry were eliminated in the first round of the 8 team tournament by the Trojans.

Notching wins for Mercer were: Colton Smith (220), decision; Ben Shaffer (113), decision; Austin King (120) forfeit; Trevor Fowler (126) decision; Rodney Brant (138), decision; Alex Shaffer (145), decision.

Reynolds won the championship with a 28-24 decision in the finals, while Saegertown was third by defeating Greenville in the consy finals. The top three teams moved on to the PIAA playoffs. Reynolds advances to Hershey for the state tourney, while Saegertown and Fort LeBoeuf faced wrestle-in bouts.

ä Sharon 6, Mercer 0 — At Plaza Lanes, Brent Elliott (226), Steven Merchant (215) and Nick Carlo (213) led the Tigers’ triumph. Dylan Mandell (164) and Cody Nespor (156) paced Mercer.
