ä Grove City 5, Sharon 0 — At Buhl Park, the visiting Eagles improved to a perfect 3-0 with the sweep of the Tigers on Friday.
Matt Welker, Evan Lowers and Chris Adams swept singles play for Grove City while the teams of Frankie Bassani and Ravi Patel and Kyle Yeakle and Lee Wishing prevailed in doubles play.
Singles: Welker (GC) def. John Benedetto, 6-1, 6-0; Lowers (GC) def. Doug McVehil, 6-1, 6-0; Adams (GC) def. Jack Evans, 6-2, 6-2. Doubles: Bassani-Patel (GC) def. Dylan Cerroni-Steven Merchant, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4; Yeakle-Wishing (GC) def. Skyler Villegas-Ross Ballard, 6-1, 6-2.
ä Hickory 8, Mercer 3 (10 inn.) — At Veterans Field at Brandy Springs Park, the visiting Hornets harvested the road win.
Starter Steve Piston punched out 7 in 6 stanzas, yielding 3 runs on 4 hits and 2 walks, while Mark DiBattiste added 4 frames of scoreless relief, allowing 3 hits, fanning 5, walking 3.
Also for Hickory (2-2 Region 2-AA, 2-5 overall), Anthony Cannone cracked a single and double, Tommy Cannon collected 3 hits, Brady Leunis lent 2 hits, and DiBattiste doubled.
Starting Mercer moundsman Nate Guiler gave up only 3 runs on 6 hits in 7 stanzas, striking out 9 and walking 4. Reliever Landon Glass gave up 5 runs on 4 hits and 3 walks in 2 innings while whiffing 2. Edwards doubled for Mercer, also.
ä Sharon 5, Mercer 4 (9 inn.) — At Sharon, the Tigers (2-1) rallied to tie the game in the bottom of the 7th inning to force extra innings and then Nick Carlo doubled to score Josh Nichols in the 9th for the win.
In the 7th, Nichols walked and stole second base and Justin Stefanowicz drove him in to tie the game.
Joey Rahn and Daniel Vanderslice each pitched 4 innings for Sharon and Cody Frazier pitched the 9th. Rahn struck out 6, walked 5 and gave up 2 runs on 5 hits and Vanderslice fanned 5, issued 2 free passes and surrendered 2 runs on 3 hits.
Nichols had 3 singles for the Tigers, Carlo doubled and singled, Mike Songer had 3 singles and Stefanowicz registered 2 singles.
Danny Miller pitched 7 innings for Mercer. He had 5 strikeouts, 4 walks and gave up 4 runs on 9 hits. Nick Guiler pitched the 9th frame.
Zach Wimer led Mercer at the dish with 2 singles. His 2-run single gave the Mustangs a 4-3 lead in the top of the 7th inning.
ä Hickory 5, Rocky Grove 1 — At Hermitage, the Hornets (1-5) picked up their 1st win of the season Saturday with a 4-run victory over the Orioles.
Brady Leunis threw a complete-game 4-hitter for Hickory. He collected 7 strikeouts and issued no walks.
Mark DiBattiste tripled and singled for the Hornets, Tommy Cannon had 2 singles and Jacob Andrusky doubled.
Dylan Propek took the loss for RG. He whiffed 2, walked 2 and gave up 5 hits in 4ì innings. Breck Schneider finished the game in relief.
Schneider had 2 singles to pace Rocky Grove at the plate.
ä Grove City 11, Ft. Le-Boeuf 3 — At Memorial Park in Grove City, coach Pat Forese’s Eagles improved to 4-1 with the win over the Bison.
Ryan Grace earned the win on the mound. He had 4 strikeouts, 2 walks and allowed 9 hits in 6 innings.
Dustin Maine doubled for Grove City and Matt Gordon, Jordan Anderson and Jesse Hodge all had 2 singles.
Mike Steadman suffered the setback for Ft. LeBoeuf. He went 3-plus innings with 1 strikeout, 4 walks and allowed 5 runs to score.
Steadman singled and doubled and Levi Ehrhart and Josh Greggs both had 2 singles.
ä Grove City 12, Gen. McLane 2 (6 inn.) — At Grove City’s Memorial Park, the Eagles’ season-opening homestand continued with another win.
Winning pitcher Matt Gordon garnered 9 strikeouts and permitted just 2 hits and 2 walks. Also for Grove City (3-1), Ben Lucas laced a hit and tallied 3 times, Jordan Anderson added a single and 3 ribbies,a nd Jesse Hodges had 2 hits and 3 RBI.
Losing Lancers’ hurler Hendricks had a rough 1st frame, allowing 3 runs.
Veteran mentor Pat Forese’s Eagles entertain Fort LeBoeuf today at 1 p.m.
ä Wilmington 7, Grove City 0 — At Grove City’s Memorial Park, winning Lady Hounds’ hurler Abby Sotter fired a 4-hitter, whiffing 11 and walking only 1. She also aided her own cause by drilling a double. Also for Wilmington (4-0), Lexie Donati and Cassidy Marett mustered 3 and 2 hits, and Kristen Kline singled and doubled.
For Grove City (0-5), Kristi Sestak stroked a single and double, while starting pitcher Taylor Shingledecker suffered the setback. In 2êinnings she allowed 6 runs, 5 hits and 3 walks, whiffing 2.
ä Sharpsville 6, Mercer 5 — At Sharpsville, Megan Davis drilled the 3rd of her 3 hits in the home half of the 7th stanza to lift the Darlings to victory.
Winning pitcher Maddie Shuttleworth went the distance, whiffing 2 and allowing all 5 runs.
Also for Sharpsville (3-1), McKenzie Popatak pounded a pair of doubles, and Megan Whalen whacked 3 hits including a triple and drove in 3 runs.
Allie Cameron suffered the setback for Mercer (3-1).
ä Mercer 14, Reynolds 4 — At Transfer, Melissa Shoemaker fired a no-hitter with 7 strikeouts and 5 walks as coach Jack Trott’s Lady M’s (3-0) defeated the Lady Raiders.
Hailey Gearhart suffered the loss for Reynolds. She struck out 3, walked 3 and allowed 8 runs on 8 hits in 3ê innings of mound duty. Paige Baker came on in relief and finished the game. She whiffed 3 batters and surrendered 6 runs on 6 hits.
For Mercer, Aubrey Angermeier singled and doubled, Heather Woods ripped 2 singles and a triple, Analise Whenry singled and doubled and Ashley Ryder had a double.
ä Sharon 5, Grove City 1 — At Wengler Field in Sharon, Gabby Gadola fired a complete-game 5-hitter with 2 strikeouts and 1 walk as the Lady Tigers (3-0) topped the Lady Eagles (0-4).
Aubriana Dellibovi led the Sharon offense with 2 singles and 3 RBI, Mallory Torr singled and doubled, Kristina Jacoway ripped a 2-bagger and Marissa Monnin added a pair of singles.
Taylor Shingledecker took the loss for GC in pitching 2 2/3 innings. She struck out 6 batters, issued 3 walks and gave up 5 hits.
Micaela King doubled for the Lady Eagles and McClaren had 2 singles.
ä Titusville 17, Grove City 2 (3 inn.) — At Titusville, Shana Grosch, Amy Clark and Kim Finley all homered as the Lady Rockets beat GC (0-3).
Grosch, who also earned the win with 2 strikeouts, 1 walk and 4 hits, also singled, Clark doubled and singled and Finley and Kate Garrett both doubled.
Maddie Elberty took the loss for GC. She walked 2 and gave up 11 runs on 9 hits in 1 inning.
Taylor Shingledecker belted a 2-run homer for the Lady Eagles and Katie Maine doubled.
