HIGH SCHOOL WINTER SPORTS ROUNDUP: Lady M's roll over Lakeview

Mercer cans 10 treys in victory

(Continued)

Mercer County Area — ä Oil City 54, Sharon 49 — At Sharon, the teams met for the 2nd time in 3 nights, and unfortunately for the host Tigers the outcome was the same in the Region 5-AAA affair.

The teams were tied a 22 at intermission, but Oil City secured a 16-10 edge during the 3rd period, then held on in the 4th frame.

Devon Geib garnered a game-high 17 points for the Oilers (8-2, 13-2), while Andrew Williams went for 14. Oil City shot 15-for-20 from the free-throw line.

In its 6th straight setback, Sharon (4-6, 7-9) was led by Carnell Hawkins’ 15 points and ’Bray Jennings’ 11, which included a trio of treys. However the Tigers tallied only 6 of 9 freebies.

ä Kennedy Catholic 80, VisionQuest 62 — At Franklin High, coach Rick Mancino’s Golden Eagles improved to a perfect 6-0 in Region 1-A and 10-6 overall with the win over the Eagles (3-2, 4-11).

Sam Crow posted a 15-point, 10-rebound double-double to key KC, Gerald Zachar scored 13 points and dished out 8 assists, Andre Campbell registered 11 markers, and Gavin Cianci grabbed 7 rebounds.

Jessie Robinson scored a game-high 22 points to lead VQ and Dominik Robinson had 19.

ä Farrell 62, Kennedy Catholic 51 — At Hermitage, the Golden Eagles held a slim 13-12 lead after the opening 8 minutes, but the Steelers (16-1) outscored KC 19-5 in the 2nd quarter to pull away for the non-region win.

Ike Jones led the way for Farrell with 15 points while Clifton McNair and Chris James had 11 points each.

Andre Campbell fired in a game-high 16 for Kennedy Catholic (10-7), Gerald Zachar was 11-of-12 from the charity stripe and finished with 13 points and Sam Crow bucketed 11.

ä George Junior Republic 53, Meadville 50 — At Grove City, the host Tigers notched the hardfought Region 5-AAA victory as Ron Pearson drilled a key trey with about 10 seconds remaining in the contest.

The game was tight throughout with GJR up 15-11 after one frame and 27-19 at half. The Bulldogs hacked the GJR lead down to 38-32 at the 4th quarter turn and then closed the gap near the end.

  • On to baseball GC coach Bell retired — sort of!

You can take the man out of coaching, but you can’t take coaching out of the man.
Former Grove City High football coach Jeff Bell has spent his first few months of retirement hearing the ping of a baseball ricocheting off an aluminum bat instead of clap of shoulder pads coming together.
“My grandson Maddox (Bell) and a few of his friends play on a traveling team, so I’m helping out with that,” said Bell, who retired as the Eagles’ football coach this past winter. “They’re a good group of kids to work with and this is a lot more enjoyable. It’s a lot less stress.

  • RANDOM THOUGHTS: Pouncey latest Steeler to make court news

HERE I THOUGHT, we were going to make it through an offseason without a Pittsburgh Steeler getting in trouble for something stupid.
Thanks Maurkice Pouncey for allowing that to not happen.
I just love seeing Steelers players in the police blotter or on the court docket (tongue firmly in cheek).

  • EXTRA INNINGS: Forget trade deadline, focus on signing Martin

WHILE BASEBALL fans are focused on tomorrow’s 4 p.m. EDT non-waiver trade deadline, there is an issue that is even more pressing for the Pirates: re-signing catcher Russell Martin, eligible for free agency after the 2014 season.
Andrew McCutcheon is the team’s most valuable player, but Martin is the most valuable TO the Pirates. It is no coincidence that the Pirates’ return to the postseason last year occurred in Martin’s first year with the Bucs.
