Mercer cans 10 treys in victory

Mercer County Area — BOYS BASKETBALL

ä Sharon 53, Grove City 45 — At “The Eagle’s Nest” in Grove City, coach Jason Rankin’s Tigers (5-6, 8-9) snapped a 6 game losing streak in posting an 8-point Region 5-AAA victory over the Eagles (6-6, 11-6).

Aubray Jennings had 11 points to lead Sharon while Mark Henry and Daunell Stovall had 10 each.

Derek Turner rifled in a game-high 20 points for Grove City.

ä Lakeview 48, Reynolds 36 — At Stoneboro, the Sailors (2-7, 7-11) led 13-10 after the opening 8 minutes, 23-20 at halftime, 31-26 after 3 and outscored the Raiders 17-10 in the final quarter to notch the Region 2-AA upset.

Zach VanDusen scored a game-high 13 points to pace Lakeview and Brandon Rice added 11 markers.

Anthony Beck had 11 points for Reynolds (5-4, 12-5) and Garhett Frable tallied 9 points.

ä Hickory 64, Grove City 35 — The host Hornets Friday rolled to the Region 5-AAA victory, avenging a 68-66 setback at Grove City earlier this season.

After a 1st frame that featured 4 deadlocks and a half-dozen lead changes, Hickory harvested a 28-24 margin at intermission. However the Hornets erupted for an 18-3 third-quarter surge.

While the Eagles endured 1-for-7 shooting with a handful of turnovers during that 8-minute nightmare — 18.5 points-per-game scorer Derek Turner was whistled for his 3rd and 4th personals, the latter with 2:01 left, by which time he had scored 4 points — a half-dozen Hornets contributed scores, led by Anthony Cannone’s 5.

Cannone connected for a game-high 22 points and he and Conley’s co-conspirators included Bubba Pryts (10 points, 4 rebounds), Donté Green (7 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists), Nick Tantuo (game-high 6 assists, 5 rebounds, 4 points), Nate Mastrian (2 treys), and Brandon Rhoades (5 rebounds).

Hickory (8-3, 13-3) has won 4 consecutive contests and 8 of its last 9.

After a pleasantly surprising 9-1 start, Grove City (6-5, 11-5) is trending in the wrong direction at the most inopportune time, having lost 3 straight and 4 of its last 6.

Turner and Danny Torok tallied 11 points apiece and Spencer Marnich — playing just days after his father’s death — hauled down a team-high 6 rebounds while Torok dished out 3 assists.

However the Eagles ended 14 for 38 (36.8 percent) from the floor and committed 19 miscues, compared with respective totals of 28 for 53 (52.8) and 14 for Hickory. — By Ed Farrell, Herald assistant sports editor.

ä Farrell 62, Franklin 38 — At Farrell’s E.J. McCluskey Gymnasium, the Steelers rolled in the Region 5-AAA contest.

Coach Roland Shannonhouse’s Steelers led 15-8 after one period and 28-18 at halftime. After 3 frames the hosts were up 39-26 before putting another 23 points on the board in the final quarter.

Ike Jones led Farrell (10-1, 15-1) with 19 points, while Clifton McNair added 11 points and Chris James 10. Issac Grain paced the Knights (3-7, 6-9) with 14 markers.

  • THE CHECKERED FLAG: Up and down week for Sodeman

LAST FRIDAY I headed south to add I-77 Raceway Park to my track attended list, which made for 162nd track all-time.  I-77 is located south of Ripley, West Virginia just off Interstate 77.  This season, I-77 moved from the crowded Saturday night line-up to Friday night racing and teamed up with Ohio Valley Speedway.  I-77 normally runs Super Late Models, Semi-Late Models, E-Mods, Mod Lites, and 4-Cylinder Mini Stocks.  With the Sprint Cars on the schedule, I decided to make the trip and they were joined by the Super Late Models, Semi-Late Models, and E-Mods.

  • THE CHECKERED FLAG: Blaney still running hot on area tracks

LAST THURSDAY I headed southwest to Atomic Speedway, formerly known as KC Raceway.  The 1/3-mile high-banked dirt oval is located an hour south of Columbus, Ohio just off Route 23 near Alma.  It was my first visit in a couple years.  A big crowd turned out on Independence Day Eve as the All Star Circuit of Champions Sprint Cars were back along with the Super Late Models and E-Mods.  The Ohio Speedweek event the week before drew a huge 62-car field and Thursday’s event drew 33.
After an astounding Speedweek winning the final three races and four of six, Dale Blaney returned to the track that he last got defeated at.  On the Speedweek show, Jac Haudenschild made the winning pass of Blaney, while Blaney finished second.  Last Thursday, even a seventh starting spot didn’t derail Blaney for long.  The Hartford, Ohio racer worked his way to the front and made the winning pass of race-long leader Tim Shaffer on lap 16.  One caution three laps from the finish was all that slowed Blaney’s run to another $5,000 payday.  It was Blaney’s fourth straight win, sixth of the season, and all-time leading 105th of his career with the All Stars.

  • EXTRA INNINGS: Bucs fans loved Burnett, but let's leave him in Philly

THERE IS NO no doubt that A.J. Burnett made a huge impact during his two seasons with the Pirates.
When he arrived in the spring of 2012, so did hope for fans wearied by teams that hadn’t seen a winning record in 20 summers.
While he certainly did not turn the tide by himself, he turned the wheel. His swagger sometimes didn’t play well with management, but even the Buc brass had to appreciate the new culture that Burnett helped his teammates create.
