Mercer cans 10 treys in victory

Mercer County Area — The Mercer County Hall of Fame recently inducted former Mercer High star Sandi Bittler, one of the greatest long-range shooters in high school and college history. This year’s team isn’t too bad from outside the arc either!

At Mercer, the Lady M’s scored 10 3-pointers en route to a 59-21 Region 2-AA victory over the visiting Lakeview Lady Sailors.

Mercer (6-2, 12-5) was led by Jordan Fisher, who came off the bench to score 17 points for the Lady M’s. Fisher was a perfect 5 for 5 from beyond the 3-point line.

“(Fisher) is absolutely that spot shooter for us. If you leave her alone, she’s going to spot up and knock it down, and that’s what she did for us (Monday),” said head coach Aaron Cook.

The Lady M’s went on a 13-point run to start the third quarter before Lakeview (0-10, 5-11) scored their first points of the second half on Sam Womer’s foul shot with just over 4 minutes to play in the quarter.

Back at Lakeview on Jan. 9, the Lady Sailors scored 18 third-quarter points to trim Mercer’s 13-point halftime lead to 45-41 before the Lady M’s regained control of the game in the final frame.

“At their place a few weeks back, we were up at the half and kind of laid an egg in the third quarter,” Cook said. “But in the locker room at halftime (Monday), I told the girls that I wanted to see how long we can go without letting Lakeview score and I think that really set the tone for the rest of the game,” Cook said.

Lexie Arkwright produced 15 points and 4 assists for the Mustangs, while Megan McKinney added 9 points and 8 rebounds. Also for Mercer, freshman Haylie Glass contributed 6 points and Adelyn Cook had 5.

For the Lady Sailors, Womer tallied 8 points and 8 rebounds to lead the visitors. Raygen Fischer and Hailee Foster each had 5 points apiece for Lakeview. The Lady Sailors had 18 turnovers to Mercer’s 7.

“Ten 3-pointers carries the momentum of the game and many of those shots were not contested by us,” said Lakeview head coach Jodi Seddon. “I give Mercer a lot of credit. When they’re shooting the ball that well, there’s no opportunity for us to rebound there. It is what it is.”

  • THE CHECKERED FLAG: Western Pa.'s Zeigler scores big

LAST FRIDAY, I headed west to Attica Raceway Park for the FAST “410” Sprint Cars and UMP Late Model “Summer Nationals Hell Tour” along with the first appearance by the UMP (E) Mods.  A great field of 37 Late Models, 28 Sprints, and 23 E-Mods were on hand along with a packed house.  Overcast conditions made for a fast 1/3-mile track that provided great racing all night long.
Craig Mintz picked up the win the last time I was at Attica on June 6, but shortly thereafter suffered a back injury that kept him out of action for a month.  On Friday night, Mintz returned and led every lap of the 30-lap Sprint Car feature for his season’s third win.  The Gibsonburg, Ohio driver’s victory was worth $3,000 and had to hold off a last lap slide job by Christopher Bell.

  • THE CHECKERED FLAG: Up and down week for Sodeman

LAST FRIDAY I headed south to add I-77 Raceway Park to my track attended list, which made for 162nd track all-time.  I-77 is located south of Ripley, West Virginia just off Interstate 77.  This season, I-77 moved from the crowded Saturday night line-up to Friday night racing and teamed up with Ohio Valley Speedway.  I-77 normally runs Super Late Models, Semi-Late Models, E-Mods, Mod Lites, and 4-Cylinder Mini Stocks.  With the Sprint Cars on the schedule, I decided to make the trip and they were joined by the Super Late Models, Semi-Late Models, and E-Mods.
