North East Invitational

Grove City High girls established 4 school standards.

The 200 medley relay foursome of Meghan Terwillinger, Renee Decker, Kimmi Wendelschaefer and Emma Rastatter ended 2nd at the invite in a time of 155:47. And in the 100 breaststroke, Wendelschaefer went 1:10.46 to place 2nd and establish another Eagles’ mark.

“Six swimmers scoring over 150 points — that is incredible!” gushed Grove City Coach Karen Wendelschaefer. “These girls are having a great season and are going into the second half of the season with incredible confidence.”

Other Grove City placewinners were:

ä 200 individual medley — Terwilliger, 1st, 2:18.

ä 50 freestyle — Rastatter, 3rd, 25.86.

ä 500 freestyle — Wendelschaefer, 4th, 5:39

ä 200 IM — Erin Schmidt, 6th, 2:29.

ä 100 butterfly — Schmidt, 6th, 1:11.

ä 100 backstroke — Decker, 5th, 1:03; Cassie Wolowic, 9th, 1:09.

ä 400 freestyle relay — Grove City, 3rd.

ä Slippery Rock 54, Meadville 35 — At Meadville, the Lady Rockets of coach John Tabicz rolled to a 19-13 first quarter lead and never looked back.

Nicole Papley and Marissa Siebka each scored 17 points to pace the winners who moved to 1-1 in the region rankings. Newsome had 21 for Meadville.

ä Sharon 35, Sharpsville 30 — Tanayja Sanders scored 7 third-period points Monday night and Mallory Torr tallied a pair of clutch free throws, leading the Lady Tigers to a 35-30 Region 2-AA win over visiting Sharpsville.

Sanders, the senior post, secured an 11-point, 10-rebound double-double, staking Sharon (3-1, 6-5) to its 5th success in its last 6 games. Conversely, Sharpsville (1-3, 4-7) suffered its 4th setback of the season by 5 points or less.

ä Hickory 69, Meadville 22 — At “The Hive” in Hermitage, Nikki Arbanas’ scoring output alone equaled Meadville as the Lady Hornets rolled to a perfect 4-0 in Region 5-AAA and 12-0 overall with a win over the Lady Bulldogs (1-3, 2-9).

Arbanas, a YSU recruit, fired in 22 points and had 4 steals for Hickory, Holly Grober registered 12 points, 9 rebounds, 4 steals and 5 assists, Nicole Lacava registered 12 points and grabbed 5 boards and Reganne O’Brien added 9 points and 4 rebounds.

Kiashia Newsome led the way for Meadville with 11 points.

ä Franklin 45, Grove City 44 — At Grove City, the Lady Knights notched a measure of vengence for an earlier loss to Grove City (53-50) at Conneaut Area’s Booster Club holiday tourney.

Franklin forged almost flawless free-throw shooting, as Angelina Starr (10 for 10) and Becca Gravatt (8 of 9) garnered 18 of 19 attempts. Conversely, the Lady Eagles ended 13 for 21 from the sin stripe.

Starr scored a game-high 19 points and Gravatt got another 18 for Franklin (3-2, 7-5).

Danyelle Lucido led Grove City (2-1, 7-4) with 11 points. She tossed in a trio of triples.

ä Greenville 52, Mercer 46 — At Greenville, the Lady Trojans (2-2, 5-5) pulled off the Region 2-AA upset over the Lady M’s (3-1, 9-4).

Molly Montalvo notched 12 points, 6 rebounds, 4 steals and 3 assists for Greenville while Casslyn Holder registered 10 points, 9 boards and 2 assists.

Also for the Lady Trojans, Jillian Herrick had 4 assists, 4 rebounds and 3 steals, Cameron Leary ripped down 10 boards and Rebecca Fagley added 6 rebounds, 7 assists and 3 steals.

Alexis Arkwright fired in a game-high 25 points for Mercer and Aubrie Angermeier posted 11 markers.

“It was an overall team effort,” said 1st-year Greenville coach Jen Fagley. “The girls worked together and we got them in foul trouble. It was a much-needed emotional win for the girls. They really battled and it was a very, very physical game.

“Their defensive effort was great. When a team has a player like Arkwright, it’s hard keeping her out of the paint. We contained her enough to get the win. We’ll take it.”

ä Commodore Perry 64, Jamestown 31 — At Sheakleyville, coach Bob Messina’s Lady Panthers improved to 2-0 in Region 1-A and 8-4 overall with the victory over winless Jamestown (0-1, 0-10).

Sarah Nagy fired in 15 points to lead Commodore Perry and Emily Kitchen added 8 points and 8 rebounds.

Kaitlin Liszka scored 8 points to pace the Lady Muskies.

ä Farrell 47, Rocky Grove 38 — At Farrell’s E.J. McCluskey Gymnasium, the Lady Steelers (1-1, 3-8) jumped out to a 13-6 lead after the opening 8 minutes and went on to capture the Region 1-A clash over the Lady Orioles (0-1, 6-6).

Bria Gambill scored 13 points to lead Farrell while Tatyana Page and Whitney Murray had 9 points each for Lady Steelers’ skipper Eddie Turosky.

  • THE CHECKERED FLAG: Western Pa.'s Zeigler scores big

LAST FRIDAY, I headed west to Attica Raceway Park for the FAST “410” Sprint Cars and UMP Late Model “Summer Nationals Hell Tour” along with the first appearance by the UMP (E) Mods.  A great field of 37 Late Models, 28 Sprints, and 23 E-Mods were on hand along with a packed house.  Overcast conditions made for a fast 1/3-mile track that provided great racing all night long.
Craig Mintz picked up the win the last time I was at Attica on June 6, but shortly thereafter suffered a back injury that kept him out of action for a month.  On Friday night, Mintz returned and led every lap of the 30-lap Sprint Car feature for his season’s third win.  The Gibsonburg, Ohio driver’s victory was worth $3,000 and had to hold off a last lap slide job by Christopher Bell.

  • THE CHECKERED FLAG: Up and down week for Sodeman

LAST FRIDAY I headed south to add I-77 Raceway Park to my track attended list, which made for 162nd track all-time.  I-77 is located south of Ripley, West Virginia just off Interstate 77.  This season, I-77 moved from the crowded Saturday night line-up to Friday night racing and teamed up with Ohio Valley Speedway.  I-77 normally runs Super Late Models, Semi-Late Models, E-Mods, Mod Lites, and 4-Cylinder Mini Stocks.  With the Sprint Cars on the schedule, I decided to make the trip and they were joined by the Super Late Models, Semi-Late Models, and E-Mods.
