Another notch on the scholastic resumé for Fawn Miller.
The rising Lakeview High senior ended as runnerup in the javelin competition at this past weekend’s Nike Invitational at North Carolina A&T University, Greensboro.
Miller, the two-time reigning PIAA Class AA titlist and commonwealth record-holder, threw 153-5. Kansas’ Heather Bergmann, already a senior, won with a final throw of 157-5. There were 31 competitors in the event.
“It’s the largest high school invitational in the country,” Lady Sailors’ skipper Greg Slatcoff said. “At two different points (Miller) was actually leading. ... She looked very good, she had six very good throws. I thought she was highly competitive throughout.
“She would like to have won, but both Mark (Hannay, Miller’s throwing coach) and myself were very pleased with the results.”
Slatcoff said they will accompany Miller to Ypsilanti, Mich. and Eastern Michigan University Juy 1 for the Youth Nationals. The winner and runnerup in each event would then qualify for the World Youth Games in Italy, July 9-15, Slatcoff said. They would leave July 4.
“That’s a good possibility,” Slatcoff said.
“She’s getting better,” Slatcoff assessed. “I will say, although she hasn’t thrown quite as far this year as last year, technique-wise, she’s ahead of the game.”
