Healing won't come without the Wonderful Counselor

By Carl A. Nicklas, MA, MAR

GROVE CITY — One truth that I reveal to each client that comes into my office for therapy is that, no matter how good I am as a counselor, healing will not come without dependence on the Wonderful Counselor, Jesus Christ.

We can despairingly call a friend, spill our physical and emotional pain in the counselor's office, or shout our problem from the housetops in the frantic hope that help will appear; however, true healing and recovery only comes as we are willing to give our lives and will over the care of God.

As we are in the midst of the Advent season, it is fitting to focus on the prophetic voice of Isaiah and his testimony, "For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given. And the government shall be upon his shoulder. And his name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace." (Isaiah 9:6)

Our Lord Jesus Christ is called Wonderful. In Christ are hidden invaluable wonderful treasures. Christ is called Wonderful, because he has inconceivable methods of assisting us. He is a wonder of a Counselor.  The counsel He gives is above the counsel of ordinary men.  It is the counsel of Yahweh---the great I AM.

Isaiah 28:29 tells us of "the Lord of hosts, who is wonderful in counsel and excellent in guidance."

The child who shall be called such wonderful names will give exceptional counsel to a confused world, said Isaiah. "Never has man spoken as this man!" echoed an astonished multitude in the Messiah's day.

We have to learn to get our counsel from God. "Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly" says the psalmist (Psalm. 1:1). We can telephone in despair to a friend, spill our physical and emotional pain in the counselor's office, or shout our problem from the housetops in the frantic hope that help will appear. And those things may give us temporary relief from our pain, but if we desire true and permanent healing we need to go to God.

Are you worried? Go to God. Are you depressed, sick, or frightened? Go to God. Are you dejected? Go to God. My friend who helped me to find recovery and healing did the best thing for me - he taught me to look to God for counsel. He was so knowledgeable that it was hard for me to look elsewhere. But he was wise enough to teach me that he was not as wise as my Wonderful Counselor.

Psychologists, counselors, and pastors have a wealth of knowledge and insight into the problems that our society faces. They can teach us strategies and provide interventions, which may help for a time. But if we want to be healed completely - physically, emotionally and spiritually - wise men (and women) will point us to the author of eternal life and healing, the Wonderful Counselor, Jesus Christ!

He is the truth that sets the captive free from addictions, life controlling problems, abuse, depression, anxiety, and much more.

The Hope Center is a ministry of The First Church of God in Grove City, which exists to help hurting individuals connect with the Wonderful Counselor. We hope and pray for you to have a life changing encounter with the Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, and Prince of Peace as you celebrate His birth!
