Mercer native to be ordained Dec. 5 as Presbyterian minister

MERCER — Mercer resident Elizabeth “Beth” Suzanne Arnold will be ordained into the ministry of Jesus Christ by the Presbytery of Shenango, a body of the Presbyterian Church U.S.A., which examined and approved the candidate at a recent meeting. The ordination will take place at a 3 p.m. worship service Dec. 5 in Trinity Presbyterian Church, 110 E. Market St., Mercer, which is Arnold’s home church.

According to Presbytery records, hers will be the first ordination in the history of the Trinity congregation since Joseph T. Smith was ordained and installed in 1842.

A 2010 graduate of Pittsburgh Theological Seminary, Arnold will serve as interim pastor at Sandy Lake (Pa.) Presbyterian Church.

Arnold, who earned a bachelor’s degree in clinical science in 2002 and a master’s degree in physical therapy in 2003 from Ithaca (N.Y.) College, has worked as a physical therapist in Detroit and Pittsburgh and began studies at the seminary in 2006.

A longtime attendee at the New Wilmington Mission Conference, she has participated and led numerous missions trips around the world. Most recently, she was the 2009 Valentour Scholarship recipient at the seminary, and from May through July 2009 she visited the Dominican Republic, Haiti, South Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, and other places in southeast Asia.

She has received numerous awards, including The Michael Wilson Keith Memorial Prize in Homiletics at the seminary.

The 1998 valedictorian at Mercer Area High School, she is the daughter of Mark and Judy Arnold. She has a sister, Katie, who is a librarian for the Avon Grove School District, West Grove, Pa. in Chester County.

A reception in the church social hall will follow the ordination service.

The church building is handicap accessible.

Baptists don't have sex standing up because it looks too much like dancing.
This was the type of candor presented by Pam Stenzel for recent back-to-back programs at Grove City Alliance Church in Pine Township about sex and sexuality.
The comic relief served to lighten the mood due to much weightier subject matter Stenzel addressed at the talks; mainly, the prevalence of STDs among young women that can destroy their fertility, future Ð and even lives.
