Virginia Mae Thompson Abbott of 248 S. Myers Ave., Sharon, passed away peacefully at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 17, 2010, in her home after an extended illness. She was 75.
Mrs. Abbott was born June 20, 1934, in Mercer to Emmett E. and Gladys Mae Filer Thompson.
She was a 1952 graduate of Hickory High School, Hermitage.
As a member of Covenant Presbyterian Church in Sharon, Mrs. Abbott sang in the Chancel Choir, belonged to the Presbyteers Sunday school class, taught Sunday school through the years and helped in the kitchen cooking for the youth club and church retreats.
She was an avid bowler, having belonged for many years to the Tuesday Morning Breakfast League at the former Hickory Bowl in Hermitage.
Virginia was a loving wife and mother who was devout in her Christian faith; she was a blessing to many who knew her.
Her husband, Richard A. Abbott, whom she married June 27, 1953, survives at home.
Also surviving are: a son, Timothy R. Abbott and his wife Linda Bakmaz, Sharon; two sisters, Martha J. Moyer; and Marilyn J. and her husband David Smeltzer, all Greenville; and four brothers, Robert L. Thompson and his wife Anna, Fredonia; Emmett E. Thompson and his wife Sandy, Greenville; Jack F. Thompson and his wife Nancy, Wheatland; and Richard L. Thompson and his wife Pat, Greenville.
Several nieces and nephews also survive.
Mrs. Abbott was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, James E. Thompson.

Funeral service was Tuesday (4-20-10) in Covenant Presbyterian Church, Sharon, with Pastor Chris Wright officiating.
Interment in Oakwood Cemetery, Hermitage.
