Wayne A. Mook

Decorated war vet, sales rep belonged to groups

GROVE CITY — Obituary was published April 28, 2010.

Funeral service is Thursday for Wayne A. “Tiger” Mook, (beloved Pop-Pop) of Grove City, who died early Sunday evening, April 25, 2010, in Grove Manor, Grove City. He was 96.

Mr. Mook was born Aug. 16, 1913, in New Lebanon to Otis Lee Mook and Lillian Isabelle Mook.

He graduated from Grove City High School and attended Grove City College.

As a three-year World War II veteran with Gen. George Patton’s 3rd Army in Europe, he was in the Normandy Invasion and the Battle of the Bulge and was awarded many commendations, including five Bronze Stars, Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes, Central Europe; Good Conduct Medal, Philippines Liberation Medal, Asiatic Pacific Service Medal, European medals and Eastern Services medals. Wayne was with the first troops to enter Japan and received other citations, the Medialle du Jubile Medal from the governor of Normandy and Diplome from the French Secretariat of Defense, June 23, 1944-45.

Wayne owned and operated Mook’s Grove City Supermarket until June 1967, when he became a sales representative for JI Holcomb Co.

He was a member since 1924 of Grace United Methodist Church; belonged to the Rotary Club, Grove City Chamber of Commerce and Mercer County Shrine Club; was a lifetime member of Free and Accepted Masons Lodge 603, Grove City; the Vagabonds of Mercer; was a lifetime member of Scottish Rite’s New Castle Consistory; and a 50-year member of the Zem Zem Temple, Erie.

Wayne was a past director of the Children’s Aid Society, Mercer; and a life member of Grove City Country Club, where he was an avid golfer. He also was an “honorary winter member” of Stoneridge Country Club, Poway, Calif.

His first wife, Henrietta Cutter Mook, whom he married June 18, 1942, passed away June 29, 1996.

He was also predeceased by twin daughters, Mary and Margaret Mook, in 1948; and his sister, Marion Applegate.

Surviving are his wife, Charlotte Anderson Mook, whom he married Feb. 14, 2001, at home; two daughters, Jayne Strohlein Anton, Phoenixville, Pa.; and Patricia Buzard and her husband Dr. Russell Buzard, Escondido, Calif.; and a son, Wayne L. Mook and his wife Sharon McDermott, Millersville, Md.

Wayne leaves behind his six grandchildren, Christopher Buzard and his wife Shannon; Erik Strohlein, Marnie Strohlein, Amy Mook Smith and her husband Davey, Ellen Buzard Sussmann and her husband Andy; and Jennifer R. Mook; six great-grandchildren; three stepchildren, Mindy Anderson Gallie and her husband Jack, New Wilmington; Cathy Anderson Baker and her husband Frank, Zelienople; and Lee Anderson and his wife Cheryl, Grove City; and six stepgrandchildren and three stepgreat-grandchildren.

We love you Dad, “Pop-Pop,” “Tiger” and “Toughie.” We will miss you greatly.

Calling hours are 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today (4-28-10) in Cunningham Funeral Home Inc., 306 Bessemer Ave., Grove City.

Funeral service at 11 a.m. Thursday (4-29-10) in the funeral home with the Rev. Willard Morse, visitation pastor of Grace United Methodist Church, Grove City, officiating.

Interment with military honors at Crestview Memorial Park, Pine Township.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Children’s Aid Society, 350 W. Market St., Box 167, Mercer, PA 16137.
