Herbert H. Sump of South Pymatuning Township died Sunday morning, April 25, 2010, in St. Paul’s, West Salem Township, surrounded by his loving family. He was 87.
Mr. Sump was born April 20, 1923, in his home in South Pymatuning Township, a son of William R. and Katherine Kreh Sump.
As a self-employed dairy and grain farmer, he loved being outdoors and working the land.
He was a graduate of the former Vernon High School.
Herbert was a member of Zion’s United Church of Christ in Transfer.
He served one term on the Sharpsville Area School Board and on the South Pymatuning Planning Commission, and worked on various farm committees in Mercer County.
Mr. Sump helped with Boy Scouts.
He is survived by: his wife, Helen Steen Sump, whom he married Aug. 18, 1950; two daughters, Joanne and her husband Jim Morrison, Greenville; and Joyce and her husband Scott Uber, Mercer; a son, Glenn Chupak and his wife Opal, Hadley; nine grandchildren, Catherine Dean, Craig Morrison, Vanessa Uber, Carrie Morrison, Doug and Donald Uber, Sharon and Michael Chupak and Sheila Cresswell; five great-grandchildren; a sister, Ruby Best, Greenville; and a brother, Russell Sump, Phoenix.
Herbert was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Esther Sump; and six brothers, Fred, Carl, Harry, Paul, George and Raymond Sump.
Friends and relatives may call from 1 to 3 p.m. today (4-28-10) in Zion’s United Church of Christ, 17 Church St., Transfer.
Funeral service at 3 p.m. today in the church.
Interment in Transfer Cemetery.
