H. Edward ‘Ed’ Davis

H. Edward “Ed” Davis of 412 W. Main St., Grove City, died at 9 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 28, 2010, in his residence, having been ill since November 2008. He was 55.

Mr. Davis was born Dec. 28, 1954, in Warren, Ohio, to Harry Edward and Maxine Hodge Davis, and was raised by his foster parents, Ross and Freda Williamson.

He worked for Cooper Energy Services, Grove City, from 1975 until the plant closed in 2003, then was employed from 2003 to 2009 by Spatara Painting, Grove City.

Ed attended Greenville area schools. He graduated from Grove City High School in 1974. He wrestled and ran track during high school and played in various horseshoe, golf and pool leagues throughout Mercer County.

He was always happy to help a friend in need.

Ed was a past president of the U.S. Steelworkers from 1998 to 2003.

He was a member of American Legion Post 852 and Sons of the Legion, both Harrisville; Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 519, Grove City; and Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 1895, also Grove City, serving as president from 2008-09.

His wife, the former Katherine “Kathy” J. Hoover, whom he married Sept. 4, 1986, survives at home.

Surviving besides his wife are: a daughter, Tonya A. Long and her husband Dan, Pickerington, Ohio; two stepsons, Rick Mathieson Jr. and his wife Katherine, Mercer; and Joseph “James” Mathieson and his wife Mandi, Harrisville; two grandchildren, Taylor and Ryan Long; seven stepgrandchildren, Joshua and Heather Mathieson, Lindsay and Bridget Becker, Chloe and Joey Mathieson, and Clayton Long; and a great-grandson, Kaleb Scott Young.

He also leaves: five sisters, Cora Blair, wife of Raymond; Diana Stein; and Pamela Ward, wife of Scott, all Transfer; Deborah Rosdahl, wife of Keith, in North Carolina; and Jackie Miller, in Virginia; two brothers, William Davis, Transfer; and Howard Van Wye, husband of Sonja, in Florida; a half brother, Marvin Davis, husband of Marie, in Florida; his father-in-law, Albert Hoover Sr., Grove City; his brothers- and sisters-in-law, Buzz Hoover, Susie Richards; and LuAnn McFadden, wife of Marcel, all Harrisville; and Arthur Hoover, husband of Michelle, Forestville; and his foster sisters and brothers, Caroline Hemphill; and Steve and Marjorie Williamson.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Calling hours were Sunday (1-31-10) in Cunningham Funeral Home Inc., Grove City.

Funeral service was Monday (2-1-10) in the funeral home, conducted by Rod Burke, family friend.

Interment in Prairie Cemetery, Harrisville.
