Margaret ‘Marge’ Goleb

Longtime valley resident has family in Mercer

FARRELL — Obituary was published April 28, 2010.

Margaret “Marge” Goleb of Hermitage, formerly of 55 W. Connelly Blvd., Sharon, passed away at 1:40 a.m. Sunday, April 25, 2010, in UPMC Horizon, Farrell, with her children by her side. She was 92.

Mrs. Goleb was born Nov. 3, 1917, in Lyndora, Butler County, a daughter of Walles and Julia Benko Kanishak.

After graduating from Butler High School in 1937, she worked at the Bantam Car Co. in Butler prior to moving to the Shenango Valley in 1939.

Through the years, she worked as a coil winder for the former Sharon Transformer Division of Westinghouse Electric Corp.; a bookkeeper for Montgomery Ward’s former Sharon site; a cashier at various supermarkets; and a retail clerk at the former Valley View Department Store in Brookfield, before retiring as the printer at the former Sharon General Hospital in 1980.

On Aug. 31, 1940, she married Stanley Goleb in St. Bernadette’s Church in Masury. He preceded her in death Aug. 14, 1970.

Margaret was a member of Church of Notre Dame, Hermitage.

She was an avid reader who also enjoyed creative writing and solving word puzzles and was an avid shopper in the mid-1950s, affectionately nicknamed “Plaza Margie” by her family.

Marge had a great sense of humor, liked gospel music and the Big Band sounds, and was always willing to help a friend.Ê There is no doubt that the most important things in her life were centered around her family and friends. She felt that her greatest accomplishment was her children and she was proud of all of them.

Marge dearly loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She is survived by: her children, Carol Jean and her husband Gerald Surrena; and Stanley Robert Goleb and his wife R. Sue, all Hermitage; and John Joseph Goleb and his wife Deborah, Mercer; her grandchildren, Casey and Kim Goleb, Columbus, Ohio; Lucas and Elena Goleb, Masury; Stanley Robert Goleb Jr., Hermitage; and Jennifer and Michael MacDonald, Columbia Station, Ohio.

Her great-grandchildren are Nathan and Ryan Goleb, Columbus; Michael Goleb, Sharon; and Logan MacDonald, Columbia Station. She is survived by a sister, Dorothy J. Kanishak, Hermitage; and a number of nieces and nephews, all of whom were very special to her.

She also leaves her special friend of 43 years, Jean Novak, Brookfield.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Andrew Kanishak; and two sisters, Mary Binder and Helen Bernoir.

Calling hours from 11 a.m. to time of service today (4-28-10) in John Flynn Funeral Home & Crematory Inc., 2630 E. State St., Hermitage. Friends may sign a guestbook at www.flynnfuneralhome.com.

Funeral service at 1 p.m. today in the funeral home chapel with Monsignor Edward J. Zeitler, pastor of Church of Notre Dame, Hermitage, officiating.

Interment in Hillcrest Memorial Park, Hermitage.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Salvation Army Corps, 660 Fisher Hill St., Sharon, PA 16146.
