Laurel B. Doody of Liberty Township and a Grove City resident since 1994, formerly of Cary, Ill., passed away at 7:10 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2014, in Visiting Nurses Association Inpatient Unit, Butler, after a 13-year courageous battle with cancer. She was 49.

Bertha H. Tallerico
Bertha H. Tallerico of Grove City, formerly of Pittsburgh, passed away Saturday evening, Feb. 1, 2014. She was 87.
Mrs. Tallerico was born Nov. 14, 1926, in New Alexandria, Pa. to Joseph G. and Mae M. Osborne Hollis.
She received a bachelor"s degree from Waynesburg College in 1949.
She and her husband, John Tallerico, Jr. were married in 1947, while they were students at Waynesburg.
Mrs. Tallerico taught English, German, and Latin for about 10 years in junior and senior high schools in Homeville (Munhall) and Brentwood, Pa. She later taught preschool at the Pleasant Hills Community Presbyterian Church for more than 20 years, until she retired. She loved working with all of her students, and was always pleased to hear of their successes later in life.
She touched many lives with her creative activities, from making baby quilts for family and friends, to tatting lace garters for brides-to-be. She also enjoyed quilting, leather-working and watercolor painting, among other artistic pursuits.
As a Girl Scout leader, Mrs. Tallerico enjoyed teaching arts and crafts of all sorts to the girls, as well as leading them on camping trips and other adventures. "Knots 'n" Notes," her signature hand-made stationery, was much sought after and she frequently received post-cards and thank-you notes from complete strangers remarking on the intricacy and originality of her work.
She was an avid reader and a collector of bells and thimbles. For many years, she participated in various church groups and functions, both in Pittsburgh and Grove City. After her mother died, she continued the tradition of making cinnamon buns for her family.
Surviving are: her daughters, Betty L. Tallerico, Grove City; and Marsha C. Tallerico, Chicago, Ill.; two sisters, Sally Bernard Kerfoot, Cleveland, Ohio; and Olive Pauza, wife of Charles, in California; a brother, Samuel Hollis, husband of Donna, Kernersville, N.C.; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; and three sisters, Mary H. Rager; Betty L. Hollis; and Lorraine H. Kerfoot.
