Joseph Richard "Dick" Lindey of Brady Township, Butler County (Slippery Rock) passed away at 3:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 8, 2013, in Orchard Manor, Pine Township, after an extended illness. He was 70.
Mr. Lindey was born Feb. 14, 1942, in the house he lived in his entire life in Brady Township, to Harry Sylvester Lindey Sr. and Myrtle Henrietta Long Lindey.
He graduated from Slippery Rock High School in 1960.
Dick was a self-employed farmer working in partnership with his brothers for Harry S. Lindey Sons, having raised beef cattle and laying hens.
Dick delivered eggs to restaurants, schools, hospitals and stores within a 50-mile radius for more than 43 years. They estimate that he had delivered more than 146 million eggs in his lifetime. He maintained the books and the farm equipment for the partnership.
He was a member and former deacon and Sunday school teacher at Zion Baptist Church, Worth Township. He served as church pianist for more than 35 years and as choir director. He was one of the directors of the Western Pennsylvania Bible Conference for many years and was a member of the ACTS Choir in Slippery Rock.
Dick served as a caretaker for many years at Zion Cemetery, Worth Township.
His wife, the former Janet Louise Cooper, whom he married Feb. 21, 1964, survives in Slippery Rock.
Also surviving are a daughter, Carol J. Swanson and her husband Douglas, Industry, Pa.; two sons, Thomas M. Lindey and his wife Joy, McColl, S.C.; and Timothy J. Lindey and his wife M.J., Slippery Rock; and three brothers, Harry S. Lindey Jr. and his wife Millicent, Cabot, Pa.; Robert W. Lindey and his wife Shirley; and Paul W. Lindey and his wife Ruby, all Slippery Rock.
Also surviving are 10 grandchildren, Evan Duncan, Camaria and Madison Lehman, Austin and Aaron Cornelius, Doug Swanson Jr., Rachael Swanson, Charles Lawrence II, Jammi Kosiorek andÊJustine VanCise; and two great-grandchildren, Ethan Lawrence and Graci Kosiorek.
He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant sister and a daughter, Amy Lindey.
Calling hours were Sunday (2-10-13) in Smith Funeral Home, Slippery Rock; and Monday (2-11-13) in Zion Baptist Church, Slippery Rock.
Funeral service was Monday in the church. with the Rev. Thomas Meling, pastor, officiating.
Interment in Zion Cemetery, Worth Township.Ê
