William J. 'Joe' Uber

GC man was retired Navy officer, worked for state

PINE — William J. "Joe" Uber, Slippery Rock Road, Liberty Township,  died at 7:50 a.m. Monday, Dec. 31, 2012, in Grove City Medical Center, Pine Township, following an illness since October 2012. He was 92.

Mr. Uber was born Oct. 15, 1920, in Liberty Township to Otto F. and Clara J. Urey Uber.

He had lived on Slippery Rock Road since 1972.

Mr. Uber married Therese "Teri" J. Pinard on Feb. 24, 1949. They met in 1948 at Port Lyautey in French Morocco. Teri passed away Dec. 18, 2008.

Joe retired 1972 from the Naval Air System Command, Washington, D.C., where he was a lieutenant commander. He enlisted in the Navy in 1942 and served his country in World War II, the Korean conflict and during the Vietnam era.

Following his retirement from the service he was employed by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania for 10 years.

He was of the Protestant faith.

He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 519, Grove City, and served as quartermaster for several years.  Also, he was a member of the Naval Institute, Retired Officers Association and USS Kitty Hawk Veterans Association.

Joe swore his grandson Ian C. Uber into the Navy in 2002. Upon Ian's graduation from the Naval Academy, Joe commissioned him as an ensign 2006. He also swore his grandson Logan O. Uber into the Air Force in 2012.

Joe was proud to serve his country; he enjoyed attending patriotic celebrations, usually dressed in his military uniform.

He was on the national registry for the U.S. Naval Memorial, Washington, D.C. 

He enjoyed his family and attended his grandchildren's activities. As a supporter of education, Joe was a vocal attendee of Grove City Area School Board meetings for many years.

Joe and his wife Teri traveled extensively throughout the U.S. in later years, visiting family and friends.

Mr. Uber is survived by four children, Jeannette C. Uber, Grove City; James R. Uber and his wife Jean, Carmichael, Calif.; Joanne M. Uber, Greenbelt, Md.; and John W. Uber and his wife Marta A., Grove City; and 11 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

In addition to his wife and his parents, Joe was preceded in death by an infant son; six sisters, Margaret I., Sara Rust, Mary Uber, Nola Foltz, Nellie LaVan and Ruth Edminston; and seven brothers, Marion "Phillip," Clair Jacob "Jake," John "Alec," James, Leonard "Buck," Lincoln "Abe" and Clarence "Bob" Uber.

Calling hours were Thursday (1-3-13) in Cunningham Funeral Home Inc., Grove City.

Funeral service was Friday (1-4-13) in the funeral home.

Burial in Crestview Memorial Park, Grove City, with military honors.
