Ruth P. Shindle- decker-Davis

Latin teacher was active member of her church

DuBOIS, Pa. — Ruth P. Shindledecker-Davis, of DuBois, where she had recently moved, and formerly of Valley View Road, Hermitage, took Jesus' hand and went to heaven on Saturday afternoon (12-22-12) at Christ The King Manor in DuBois, with family members by her side. She was 87.

Ruth was born March 31, 1925, in Sheakleyville, the daughter of the Rev. Homer H. and Bernice E. (Campbell) Thompson.

She was a 1942 graduate of Grove City High School and went on to earn a bachelor's degree in 1946 from Grove City College.

She was a charter member Hickory United Methodist Church Hermitage, since 1953.

Ruth was very active in her church having served as a Sunday school teacher and as superintendent chairman of the music committee, and a member of the board of trustees, and women's society.

She had worked as a Latin teacher at the Hermitage School District for several years.

In her younger years, she was a language teacher at Sigel (PA) High School and also had worked as a substitute Latin teacher in West Middlesex.

Ruth was a member of National Education Association of Pa., the Classics Association of Pittsburgh, and the former Hermitage Women's Club.

A fond memory of Ruth's was taking students to the annual classics festival in Pittsburgh.

She had a genuine love for teaching, reading and poetry. Ruth enjoyed people, the outdoors, and spending time with her children.

She was the widow of George O. Davis. whom she married on June 14, 1974. He died on July 6, 2002.

Her first husband was Freeman Leroy Shindledecker, whom she married on June 20, 1947. He died on September 17, 1965.

She is survived by her three children, Neil A. Shindledecker and his wife, Libby, of DuBois, Janet K. Buxton and her husband, Lee, of Mercer and  Lynn Shindledecker and his wife, Coleen, of Hermitage.

Also surviving are three stepchildren, Annette A. Paris and her husband, Tim, of Scottsdale, Ariz., Tod O. Davis, and his wife, Lori, and Jed E. Davis and his wife, Bridgett, both of Hermitage.

She is also survived by her sister, Marion Schaffner and her husband, Keith, of DuBois, along with seven grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Besides her parents and her husbands, she was preceded in death by her brother, the Rev. Herbert H. Thompson.

A memorial service will be held at a time to be announced.

Cremation was held.
