William Eugene 'Gene' Vath

Stoneboro man operated heavy equipment, hunted

STONEBORO — William Eugene "Gene" Vath, Stoneboro, passed away peacefully at 11:55 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2012 at home after an extended illness. He was 85.

Mr. Vath was born June 12, 1927 at home in Sandy Lake Township. He was a son of  Frederick M. and Esther Lou Ellen Greggs Vath.

He attended the former Giebner Country School in Sandy Lake Township. 

Gene loved to work; he had a very strong work ethic.

He ran heavy equipment over the years, including drag lines and bulldozers for local coal companies including Bobo Coal Company, Grove City; and the C.A. Fisher Mining Company, Stoneboro.

Up until a few years ago, he still operated a drag line on a project for his neighbor. For many years, he owned and operated a saw mill and was well known as a mechanic with vast knowledge of machinery. Gene also retired in 1991 from the former Cooper-Bessemer, Grove City, after 40 years of service as a mechanic and millwright.

He was a member of the Lakeview Church of God.

Gene loved to plant a huge garden and shared with many others. He also enjoyed hunting.

His wife the, former Margaret J. Neal, whom he married October 1, 1949, survives.

Also surviving are: a daughter, Maxine A. Hughes, wife of John, Mercer; a son, Kenneth E. Vath, Stoneboro; two granddaughters, Tracey J. Osborne, and her fiancée, Glen Bennefield, Mercer; and Tina R. Shacklock, wife of Steve, Mercer; six great-grandchildren,  Jessica L. Plotner, wife of John M. Jr., Stoneboro; Joseph E. McMullen Jr., Stoneboro; Alexandria A. Pashakarnis, Sandy Lake; Leah A. Martin, Mercer; Erin N. Martin, Mercer; and Cody J. Shacklock, Mercer; and two great-grandchildren, Jocelyn J. Plotner and John M. Plotner III, both Stoneboro; and seven sisters.

Mr. Vath was preceded in death by his parents; two infant brothers; and a brother, Howard Bennett Vath, who was killed in World War II.

Private services were held in Scott A. Black Funeral Home, Stoneboro, with the Rev. Nicholas E. Wilson, pastor of Lakeview Church of God, officiating.

Interment and committal services at Crestview Memorial Park, Pine Township.
