'Volunteer of the Year' was crafty, hospitable

GROVE CITY — Gladys Osborne, 99, Memorial Avenue, Grove City, died peacefully in her home at 8:29 a.m. Monday (12-3-12), a month short of her 100th birthday. 

She was born Jan. 4, 1913, in Wolf Creek Township to Othello and Melissa Montgomery Riddle. Gladys lived her entire life in the Mercer County area.

She graduated with honors from Grove City High School and worked in the accounting office of the former Cooper Bessemer, Grove City, until her marriage to William F. Osborne in 1942. He preceded her in death in 1998.

In 1992 Gladys was awarded the United Way 'Volunteer of the Year' for more than 50 years of volunteer work which included Mental Health Association, organizing picnics and parties at Warren State Hospital. She also served in various offices, baking birthday cakes for Meals on Wheels for 30-plus years, decades of service in various capacities for Lamp Lighters, the former Mercer County Living Center, Mercer County Cooperative Extension, and Grace United Methodist Church of Grove City and its X-L Class.

She baked elaborate cakes, crocheted, sewed, knitted, made candles and soap, braided rugs and made various crafts well into her 90s.

Gladys loved having family and friends of all ages to her home for breakfasts, lunches, dinners and other special occasions.

Gladys is survived by: two daughters, Kay King and her husband Mike, and Lois Osborne, all New Orleans; a grandson Abby King, New Orleans; and another grandson, Irah King and his wife Nurit and their children, Elliot and Leela, all of Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Other extended family and friends also survive.

Besides her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by an infant son, Gary; a sister; and three brothers.

Calling hours were Wednesday (12-5-12) in Cunningham Funeral Home Inc., Grove City.

Funeral service was Wednesday in the funeral home with the Rev. Willard Morse, visitation pastor of Grace United Methodist Church, Grove City, officiating.

Burial in Crestview Memorial Park, Inc., Grove City.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Mercer County Mental Health Association, 327 Stambaugh Ave., Sharon, PA 16146.
