Margaret Agnes Mount Anderson

Centenarian was nurse, lab technician, farmer

EAST LACKAWANNOCK — Margaret Agnes Mount Anderson, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Sept. 10, 2013, while residing at Countryside Convalescent Home, East Lackawannock Township. She was 102.

Mrs. Anderson was born March 24, 1911 in Fairview Township, Mercer County, the only daughter of Bert Lee and Veve Nelson Crumrine Mount.

She attended the one room school house in Fairview Township. She and her younger brother, Ralph, enjoyed their school days and the walk to school along an unpaved Route 19. In 1928, Margaret graduated from Fredonia Vocational School with 27 classmates. A class poet, she wrote a 15-stanza poem about her high school days, which she delivered again in 2008 at the Fredonia-Delaware Alumni Dinner.

Margaret graduated in 1931 as an licensed registered nurse at Christian H. Buhl School of Nursing, Sharon. Further studies enabled her to become the hospital's first certified lab technician, working under the direction of Dr. George O. Hartman.

She married Otto Russell Anderson on June 20, 1935, and moved to Anderson Farm in East Lackawannock Township on state Route 318, where they began their family.

The entire family was involved in the farm operation, which included dairy and beef herds, field crops, potatoes, peaches and other produce. The Andersons also raised pigs, chickens, turkeys, pheasants and were involved in bee keeping. Margaret supported her six children in their farm and church-related activities.

In the 1950s, Margaret took a refresher course and renewed her nursing license. She began working as a private duty nurse and then as a night supervisor at the Mercer Cottage Hospital until it closed in 1966.

Margaret was the oldest living member of Unity Presbyterian Church, Lackawannock Township, where served as a deacon and Sunday School teacher.  She was a member of the Ferver Bible Class and Presbyterian Women.

The Mt. Pleasant Grange and the J.B. (Jolly Bunch) Quilting Club were also an important part of her life.

Margaret's special interests included flower and vegetable gardening, canning and baking, Bible study, jigsaw and crossword puzzles, and playing Dominoes. She quilted or knotted crib quilts for nearly all of her great-grandchildren.

Other things for which she will be remembered are her blue eyes, quick smile, loving demeanor and her hard work.

Survivors include: a daughter, Elaine Firth and her husband Leslie N., Mercer; and four sons, Atlee R. Anderson and his wife Jan, Hammond, Ind.; Keith B. Anderson and his wife Carol, Edinburg, Texas; Myron C. Anderson and his wife Lynn, Lynn Haven, Fla.; and Otto R. Anderson II, Mercer.

Margaret leaves 17 grandchildren: Janet, Andrea and Becca; Larry and Karen; Atlee II, Chandra and Lianne; Mary and Melanie; Matthew, Steven and Orion; and Amy, Natalie, Vanessa and Candice.

Also surviving are: 17 great-grandchildren, along with a number of step-grandchildren, step-great-grandchildren and step-great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, on March 20, 1982; two daughters, a 6-month-old, Rebecca Ellen, in 1945; and Veva Ann Purvis, on May 17 of this year; her two brothers, Joseph A. Mount, and Ralph W. Mount and his wife Madeline King Mount; a son-in-law, John 'Jack' R. Purvis; and a nephew, Leeland Mount.

Memorial contributions, if desired, may be made to Brandy Springs Park, Box 414, Mercer, PA 16137; or to a church of the donor's choice.
