William Clinton Coursen

Cooper Bessemer retiree, WWII vet served in church

PINE — William Clinton Coursen, 137 Walnut St., Barkeyville, was surrounded by his family as he passed from life on Saturday, Aug. 3, 2013, in Grove City Medical Center, Pine Township, after a brief illness. He was 94.

Mr. Coursen was born Feb. 13, 1919, in Butler County, a son of Clinton F. Coursen and Carrie M. McFadden Coursen.

On Nov. 15, 1946, he married the love of his life, Della Grace Krizon, and they enjoyed nearly 67 years of marriage. Della survives.

William and Della were the parents of three children and had seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

William served in the Army Air Corps for 4 1/2 years as a crew chief and flight engineer on a B-25 Bomber, the Paper Doll. He served in North Africa, Italy, Corsica and Egypt during World War II. He was awarded the Bronze Star for meritorious service in direct support of combat operations in the Mediterranean theater of operations between January 1943 and January 1944. He was home only one day in 4 1/2 years.

William was a graduate of the former Clintonville High School and worked at and retired from Cooper Bessemer in Grove City after 36 years of employment.

William was the oldest living member of Barkeyville Church of God, with more than 65 years of membership. He attended faithfully, serving as church treasurer and trustee for many years. The church, his steadfast faith and his family were at the center of his life.

William was a fan of the Pittsburgh Pirates and Steelers. He took great pride in his lawn and garden. He enjoyed growing vegetables for the family and particularly enjoyed seeing spring and summer flowers.

He enjoyed reading until his impaired sight prevented it. He loved animals and, in recent years, Bogie, Sydney and Cooper brought him many moments of joy as they awaited their dog biscuits from "Grandpa."

In addition to his wife, William is survived by two sons, William D. and his wife Carol; and Terence A. and his wife Darlene; and a daughter, Sherry L. Surrena and her husband Harold. Also surviving are seven grandchildren, William D. Coursen Jr. and his wife Angie; Dr. Stephanie Coursen and her husband Dr. Curtis Bannister; Liza A. Hovis and her husband Matthew; Tracey S. Surrena; Chad E. Surrena and his wife Anastasia; Tricia M. Ward and her husband Jeffrey; and Joshua C. Coursen and his wife Kami. He is also survived by 11 great-grandchildren, Mickey Coursen, Mint Coursen, Olivia Bannister, Basil Bannister, Fina Bannister, Alyas Hovis, Ivy Hovis, Lance Ward, Clinton Alan Ward, Carter Coursen and Cooper Coursen. He is also survived by a brother, Paul W. Coursen, New Bern, N.C.

William was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Richard E. Coursen, James D. Coursen, Jack D. Coursen and Donald M. Coursen; and three sisters, Lois Martha Sterner, Helen J. Hanna and Donna L. Coursen.

William will be missed by his loving family and legion of friends.
