Bernice 'Bernie' Grace Riddle Badger

Mercer resident enjoyed hosting gatherings, travel

GROVE CITY — Bernice "Bernie" Grace Riddle Badger of Mercer, formerly of Grove City, passed gracefully into eternal peace at 11:40 p.m. Wednesday, April 23, 2014, surrounded by her loving family after being diagnosed with liver cancer on March 30, 2014. She was 82.

Mrs. Badger was born Sept. 3, 1931, the second of five daughters to Glenn Carson Riddle and Mildred Julia Hoffman Riddle on the family's farm in Nectarine, Venango County.

Bernie attended elementary school in the local one-room schoolhouse and graduated in 1948 from the former Wesley Area High School.

She married Robert Kenneth "Ken" Badger on July 17, 1948, in West Liberty, Pa., and they celebrated their life and undying love together for more than 65 1/2 years.

She is survived by her loving husband, Ken, at home; two daughters, Juanita (Harry Tyson) Badger, Mercer; and Julie Slater, Jackson Center; a son, Michael (Sharon) Badger, Titusville; a special daughter, Amy Spisak; a sister, Judy (Dale) McFadden, Mercer; granddaughters, Denise (Randy) Horn, Columbus, Ohio; Heather (Bill) Robinson, Dilke, Saskatchewan, Canada; and Ashley (Jesse) Sealand, Stoneboro; grandsons, Bob (Jen) Zuschlag, Greenville; Tim (Liz) Zuschlag, Grove City; Ken (Emily) Badger, Pittsburgh; and Phillip Badger, Jackson Center; great-grandchildren, Carina (Andrew), Marissa, Mager, Charlie, Harley, Taylor, Walker, Jacob, Alex, Adelle, Kyle, Aubrey, Cole, Garrett, Jackson and Arden; and two great-great-grandchildren, Richard and Payton.

In addition, she leaves numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and a host of loving extended family, friends and neighbors.

Bernie was preceded in death by her parents; her daughter, Glenda Jeanne; an infant son, Joey; three sisters, Geraldine Roxberry, Maxine Myers and Joyce Riddle; her in-laws, William and Florence Badger; twin great-grandsons, Caleb and Mason Zuschlag; and a grandson, Charles Wallace Evans II.

During Bernie's lifetime she worked at a wide variety of jobs, including being employed as a machine embroidery operator at Palmer-Smith Linens in Grove City, and driving cars at Interstate Auto Auction, Jackson Center.

However, most important to Bernie was being a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She loved spending time with her entire family hosting family get-togethers on holidays and special occasions with her husband. Bernie's home was a gathering place for all.

Bernie enjoyed traveling after her husband's retirement and they visited many states. They enjoyed a six-week trip to Alaska and back in 1971 to visit her daughter and family stationed with the Air Force in Anchorage. She enjoyed fishing and boating at Goddard State Park's Lake Wilhelm where she and Ken maintained a camp for the past 33 years.

Before losing her vision to diabetes, Bernie enjoyed machine embroidery, sewing, crafting, quilting and crocheting.

Bernie's wishes, in lieu of flowers, was the suggestion that anyone wishing to make a memorial contribution in her memory consider the American Cancer Society, 3208 B Wilmington Road, Box 5037, New Castle, PA 16105; Visiting Nurses Association Inpatient Hospice, 115 Technology Drive, Butler, PA 16001; or a charity of the donor's choice.

Bernie's most often-repeated saying upon learning she had liver cancer was, "Mom always said there were worse things than death."

Bernie was loved by many and will be greatly missed by all.
