GC school teacher enjoyed teaching second grade

GROVE CITY — Edna Mary Winger, Grove City, passed away at 9:50 p.m., Friday, Sept. 6, 2013 in Grove Manor Nursing Center, Grove City. She was 97. 

Mrs. Winger was born June 18, 1916 in McBride, Butler County, to William Winnet and Mary Edna McClung.

She was a graduate of Grove City High School and Slippery Rock State Teachers College.

She worked at J.C. Penney in Grove City and did needle point sewing for Palmer and Smith on Sandy Lake Road during her early-married years. In April of 1971, Edna retired from the Grove City Area School District, where she was a second grade teacher at the Highland Primary Center. Previously, she taught elementary students in Hookstown, Pa. and in a one-room schoolhouse in No. 5 Mine, Springfield Township.

She was a member of the East Main Presbyterian Church. Edna also belonged to Pennsylvania State Education Association.

She loved her family and was an outstanding mother. Edna enjoyed reading, sewing and crafts, particularly crocheting quilts, painting ceramics and making beaded jewelry.

She married Leroy "Bing" Winger on April 20, 1940 and was happily married 65 years until Leroy's passing on June 15, 2005.

Surviving are: her twins, Jack Lee Winger and his wife, Darlene, Poquoson, Va.; and Dixie Eve Coleman and her husband, Grady Jr., Lawrenceville, Ga.; three grandchildren, Jonathan Coleman; David Coleman, and his wife, Angela; and Joshua Coleman, and his wife, Nicole, all of the Atlanta, Ga. area.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters Dorothy Rogers, wife of Kenneth; Lois Wardle, wife of Robert; and Margie Webster, wife of John; a brother, Charles McClung, husband of Lucille; and an infant great-grandson, Kaleb.

Visitation: Was Tuesday (9-10-13) in CUNNIGHAM FUNERAL HOME, Inc., 306 Bessemer Ave., Grove City, followed by a graveside service following in Woodland Cemetery, with the Rev. Tom Funka, of East Main Presbyterian Church, officiating.      

Interment: Woodland Cemetery, beside Edna's beloved husband.
