George William Guthrie Sr.

Veteran was faithful Catholic, liked outdoors

BUTLER — George William Guthrie Sr., Scott Township, Lawrence County, died at 2:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 28, 2012 at VNA Hospice Inpatient, Technology Drive, Butler. He was 87.

Mr. Guthrie was born Sept. 29, 1924 in Pittsburgh to Ralph Joseph and Lucilla Bateson Guthrie.

He was a Navy veteran serving on the USS Marcus Island in the South Pacific. He received numerous awards and citations, including the Navy Good Conduct Medal; World War II Victory Medal; American Campaign Medal; Asiatic Campaign Medal with four Bronze Stars; Philippine Liberation Ribbon with two Bronze Stars; and Philippine Presidential Unit Citation.  

Mr. Guthrie retired from Jones and Laughlin Steel on the south side of Pittsburgh, where he worked for 38 years as an electrician. He was a member of the United Steel Workers Local 1271.

He was a faithful parishioner of St. Peters Church in Slippery Rock; and a member of the Holy Name Society. 

Mr. Guthrie was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6675, Pittsburgh.

He enjoyed his time at home, playing horseshoes. He also enjoyed the creek, swimming and gardening.

A devoted husband, Mr. Guthrie married the former Abigail Winnefred "Winnie" Carroll on Sept. 2, 1946, who died Dec. 14, 1996. 

Surviving are: a daughter, Linda Ann Guthrie Metz, wife of Ronald D., Slippery Rock; three sons, George W. Guthrie Jr., husband of Judy A. Stundon-Guthrie, Huntingdon; Ralph Joseph Guthrie, husband of Margaret Lorraine, Lewistown, Iowa; and Joseph Francis Guthrie, New Castle; and six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Ralph J.; and a sister, Sarah L. Hynes.

Calling hours were Sunday (4-1-12) in Smith Funeral Home, Slippery Rock.

Mass of Christian burial was Monday (4-2-12) in St. Peter Catholic Church, Slippery Rock, with Father Kevin Poecking, pastor, as celebrant.

Interment in St. Anthony's Cemetery, Harrisville.
