War bride of Netherlands lived in GC, was top bowler

WAKE FOREST, N.C. — Maria "Mary" H. Gilliland, formerly of Grove City, passed away June 6, 2013, in Hillside Nursing Center in Wake Forest, N.C., following a long illness.

Mary was born Nov. 11, 1922 in Eindhoven, the Netherlands. She worked at the Philips factory there until she met and married her beloved Robert on Feb. 27, 1946.

Robert was serving in the Army during World War II. She arrived in the U.S. on a ship carrying war brides on July 4, 1946, and lived in Grove City for many years, as well as other cities in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Virginia, Maryland and New York. Mary returned to Grove City to retire.

She worked for many years as a sales clerk for JC Penney and several dress shops. She was an avid bowler, often winning awards for her high average, enjoyed playing bingo and loved following all the Pittsburgh sports teams.

She leaves behind Robert, her husband of 67 years; her son, Larry Gilliland and his wife Shirley; and her daughter, Linda Conklin and her husband Larry; four grandchildren, Lori, Traci, Jeremy and MacKenzie; and seven great-grandchildren, Devin, Dylan, Dustin, Ashton, Avery, Brooklynn and Bailey.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made in Mary's memory to Grace United Methodist Church, 210 South Broad Street, Grove City, PA 16127.
