GROVE CITY — Alyce N. Montgomery, Flower Avenue, Grove City, passed away Saturday morning (6-1-13) in her home following a year-long illness. She was 88.

Alyce was born Sept. 23, 1924, in Oil City to Albert Sawatsky and Emma Thurau Sawatsky. She attended Oil City Schools.

Alyce moved to Grove City in 1941 to work at Cooper Bessemer, where she was one of the first four women to be hired as a machinist during the Pearl Harbor era.

She married Milton "Hooley" Montgomery on May 9, 1945; he preceded her in death on Jan. 22, 1993.

Alyce was a 20-year employee of Grove City Area School District and worked as the library clerk at George Junior Republic, Pine Township. She retired in 1989. She also worked several years as a part-time switchboard operator at George Junior Republic.

She attended and was a 50-plus-years member of Grace United Methodist Church in Grove City.

She was a devoted mother, a good friend and caring neighbor to many.

A hard worker, she often held down two jobs.

Along with her husband, she raised four children while also caring for her elderly father, who resided with her.

Alyce enjoyed reading, shopping and traveling, especially trips to or with her family. She loved the simple things in life, lunch out, a shopping bargain or an antique find.

She had a love for antiques and at one time had numerous collections of chickens-on-the nest, cruets, paperweights and silhouettes.

While health and distance in later years kept her from traveling, she dearly loved her grandchildren and their visits.

She is survived by two daughters, Carol Kipp, Michigan; and Beverly Montgomery, Grove City; two sons, Robert Montgomery and his wife Laura, Florida; and Gary Montgomery and his wife Leslie, New Jersey.

She is also survived by four granddaughters, Jennifer, Megan, Jordan and Natalie; and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and five sisters, Gertrude and Mildred Sawatsky, Margaret Stoudt, Ella Neubauer and Marie White.

Memorial contributions may be made to Grace United Methodist Church, 210 S. Broad Street, Grove City, PA 16127
