Russell C. Hancox

Longtime GC firefighter had worked for Cooper

PINE — Lifelong Grove City resident Russell C. Hancox died late Thursday evening, May 2, 2013, in Grove City Medical Center, Pine Township, after a short illness. He was 86.

Mr. Hancox is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Carrie Elford Hancox; and children, Russell E. Hancox, Greenville; LuAnn McKee, Mercer; David Hancox, Minneapolis; Thomas Hancox, New Wilmington; and Mary Pitzer, Slippery Rock.

He is also survived by numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He will be fondly remembered by many family members, friends, fellow firefighters, former co-workers and acquaintances.

Born Dec. 19, 1926, in Bullion, Pa., to George W. and Anna M. Urey Hancox, Russell had siblings, Harold, Lucy and George, all deceased; Bernice, Grove City; Dean, New Castle; and Boyd and Perry, both deceased.

Russell served in the U.S. Army from March 1945 to December 1946.

In addition to working as a young man in the former Meyer's Department Store, Russell was employed at Cooper Industries, formerly Cooper Bessemer, Grove City, from January 1944 until 1984, for many years as a supervisor.

Of his many accomplishments and acts of community service, his greatest love and commitment was to Grove City Volunteer Fire Department. Russell first joined the department in 1955.

Throughout his many years of active service, Russell served as first assistant chief. He was a life member of the Northwest Fire Fighters Association and a life member and past president of the Mercer County Fire Fighters Association.

He never failed to respond with speed and purpose when "the whistle blew."

His dedication to the purpose and effectiveness of the GCVFD was endless. When not responding to fire calls or other emergencies, he could often be found at the firehouse checking trucks, charging radios, visiting with fellow firefighters and performing other tasks.

Russell was a longtime member and past president of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 519, Grove City.

Russell leaves this world for the next with a long and poignant legacy.

That legacy not only includes the values and life lessons he leaves in his children, but also in his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

His legacy includes a life of selfless service to family, relatives, friends, former employers and service organizations. He was always the first one out of his seat to lend a helping hand to a family member or friend in need.

He was generous in his own way. He was often quoted as saying, "If you leave my house hungry or thirsty, it's your own fault."

Memorial contributions may be made to Grove City Volunteer Fire Department, Box 110, Grove City, PA 16127.
