Former GE, GCC employee worked in law enforcement

NEW CASTLE — Officer William J. McCarthy IV, 125 E. Leasure Ave., New Castle, passed away Thursday night (5-2-13) in the line of duty as a result of a motor vehicle accident. He was 60.

William was born in New Castle on Nov. 9, 1952. He was a son of William J. and Clara DeSanto McCarthy III, who survive in Grove City.

William was married to the former Patty Jo McFall, who survives at home.

Mr. McCarthy was of the Roman Catholic faith.

William attended Indiana University of Pennsylvania, earning a degree in general studies. He also received his legal weapons training certificate in 1980.

Mr. McCarthy worked for General Electric in Grove City for 18 years as a repair welder, head of the ergonomics team and head of the emergency response team, retiring in 2009.

Jerry also worked for Grove City College and Penn State University as the senior training and patrol officer.

Mr. McCarthy formerly worked as a police officer for the South New Castle Borough for four years.

Jerry also worked full-time for the Lawrence County district attorney as a detective/humane officer.

Most recently, Jerry was employed by the Shenango Township, Lawrence County, Police Department as a patrol officer.

He also recently received a promotion with the zoning board of Shenango Township as the new code enforcement officer.

Mr. McCarthy was a training instructor with several self-defense programs and devices; including RADD, Baton and Taser instructor.

Mr. McCarthy was an avid hunter and fisherman who loved the outdoors. He also enjoyed all types of shooting sports.

William enjoyed working and being around people, especially his fellow police officers from all the area departments.

His family considered him a jack of all trades.

He had a soft spot for animals too.

His greatest joy was spending time with his family and friends.

His grandchildren referred to him lovingly as Papa Jerry.

Anyone who knew him knows that Jerry never said "goodbye" but always a warm "God bless" when you departed.

In addition to his wife Patty Jo and parents, William is survived by two sons, Michael A. (Lynn) McCarthy, Dawsonville, Ga.; and Benjamin P. McCarthy, Philadelphia; his daughter, Christine (Nathan) Head, Dawsonville, Ga.; a stepdaughter, Laura Ann Pierce, York, Pa.; a stepson, Phillip Mark McFall, New Castle; a sister, Lynn (Dan) Busatto, Grove City; and six grandchildren, Lindsey Head, Dylan Head, Sophie Head, Grace McCarthy, Lane McCarthy and William Jackson McCarthy.

William was preceded in death by his maternal and paternal grandparents.

The family has asked to have memorial contributions be made in William's name to the Promises for Pets, P.O. Box 621, New Castle, PA. 16103; and St. Jude Children Research Hospital 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105.

Service: Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11:30 a.m. today (5-8-13) in the church, with the Rev. Frank D. Almade, pastor, as celebrant. The family will meet in the church before Mass.

Burial: Rite of Committal and Burial will be in Crestview Memorial Park, Grove City, with full military honors by the Pennsylvania State Police Ceremonial Unit.
