Retired state prison guard served in Marine Corps

GREENVILLE — Thomas C. Altman of 169 Williamson Road, Hempfield Township, passed away at 4:42 p.m. Friday (12-28-12) in the emergency room of UPMC Horizon, Greenville, after an apparent heart attack. He was 71.

He was born Aug. 2, 1941, in Pittsburgh to Roy E. and Mabel E. (Thomas) Altman.

On Nov. 9, 1964, he married Thelma L. "T-Lou" Myers. She survives at home.

For 22 years, he was employed as a corrections officer at the State Regional Correctional Facility Mercer, Findley Township, retiring in 2004.

He served in the Marine Corps from 1959 to 1962 in Hawaii.

He was a member of White Oak Shooting Club, Greenville, and enjoyed hunting, traveling and reading.

He was an avid Chicago Cubs and Pittsburgh Steelers fan.

He was a Protestant.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Thomas C. Altman and his wife Pam, Modesto, Calif.; and Roy E. Altman and his wife Nafesa, Chicago; six grandchildren, Jordan Johnson and Kevin, Rowan, Luke, Layla and Lara Altman; and two great-grandchildren, Aimee Johnson and Morrigan Johnson.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Memorial service is at 11 a.m. Saturday (1-5-13) in Loutzenhiser-Jordan Funeral Home and Cremation Services Inc., 366-368 S. Main St., Greenville, with military honors rendered by VFW Post 3374, Greenville.

Burial in Parklawn Cemetery, Jamestown.
