Charles 'Charlie' E. Hughes

Orchard Manor overseer was Fellowship manager

PINE — Charles "Charlie" E. Hughes of 606 Moreland Ave., Grove City, passed away Wednesday evening, May 8, 2013, in Orchard Manor, Pine Township, after a three-year illness. He was 81.

He was a Grove City resident since 1979 and was formerly of Warren, Pa.

Mr. Hughes was born July 16, 1931, in Pittsburgh. He was the son of Regis and Betty Hughes, who are deceased.

He married Mary Ann Baskin on Feb. 5, 1955.

Charlie was a graduate of Peabody High School, class of 1949.

Following graduation, he enlisted in the Army and joined the medical corps, serving most of his military career in Germany until late 1952. 

Charlie enrolled in Pennsylvania School of Nursing for Men, Philadelphia, earning a registered nurse degree in 1956.

He began his career in 1956 at Warren State Hospital, where he was a psychiatric nurse, and remained there until 1978 when he retired as a building administrator after 22 years of service.

In December 1978, he assumed the position of nursing home administrator at Orchard Manor. While there, he was instrumental in the development, planning and construction of Fellowship Manor. Retiring from Orchard Manor in 1990, he remained active with Fellowship Manor, serving as its building manager for many years.

Charlie was a faithful and active member for many years of Grace United Methodist Church, Grove City.

Survivors include: his wife, Mary Ann, at home; four children, Carol Gray and Lenny, Warren; Lisa Smith and her husband Larry, Grove City; Janice Armstrong and her husband David, Warren; and Charlie Hughes and his wife Robyn, Grove City; and 10 grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

Memorial contributions may be made to Grace United Methodist Church, 210 S. Broad St.; or Orchard Manor, 20 Orchard Drive, both Grove City, PA 16127.

Calling hours: 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday (5-13-13) in CUNNINGHAM FUNERAL HOME Inc., 306 Bessemer Ave., Grove City; and 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. Tuesday (5-14-13) in the chapel of Grace United Methodist Church, 210 S. Broad St., Grove City.

Service: Funeral service at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the church with the Rev. Howard Greenfield and Rev. Willard S. Morse co-officiating.

Interment: Mount Irwin Cemetery, Irwin Township, Venango County.
