Ira Walter Lakin

Veteran, retired engineer held several patents

LAWRENCE COUNTY — Ira Walter Lakin, Perry Highway, Washington Township, Lawrence County, died at 6:25 p.m. Saturday, April 19, 2014, in his residence. He was 95.

He was born Sept. 6, 1918, in Salem, Ohio, to Oscar Walter Lakin and Ora Alma Dell Lakin.

Mr. Lakin was a graduate of Salem High School.

He served during World War II with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in the Pacific theater of operations, achieving the rank of first lieutenant.

Mr. Lakin and Evelyn Edna Doepping married in June 1949. She died March 10, 2009.

He was a Protestant.

Mr. Lakin held a number of patents for steel mill equipment. He retired as an engineer from Dravo Corp., Neville Island.

He loved hunting, fishing and gardening, and enjoyed oil painting and classical music. He liked to play chess, pool and cards.

He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7465, Springfield Township.

Mr. Lakin is survived by: three daughters, Barbara and her husband Al Bauer, Greenville; Deborah Lakin, Volant; and Carol Lakin, California; two sons James and his wife Peggy Lakin, Grove City; and Richard and his wife Mary Jo Lakin, Hanceville, Ala.; a sister-in-law, Lou Lakin, Erie; eight grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Jennifer, and two brothers, Meahrl and Oscar Lakin.
