James J. Cornelius

Retired dockworker born in SR was loving family man

HERMITAGE — James J. Cornelius, 100 N. Buhl Farm Drive, Hermitage, passed away at 3:55 a.m. Sunday (4-14-13) in Nugent Convalescent Home, Hermitage, after a brief illness. He was 83.

Mr. Cornelius was born April 11, 1930, in Slippery Rock, a son of Lee Fred and Edna Morrison Cornelius and was a graduate of Slippery Rock High School. 

He retired in 1985 from JC Penney Co. in the Shenango Valley Mall, Hermitage, where he was a dockworker for more than 20 years. 

He previously worked in the same capacity for different trucking companies in the area. 

Jim was a member of the Hickory United Methodist Church, Hermitage, and a former member of Oakland Ave. United Methodist Church, Sharon, and the former Farrell United Methodist Church. 

He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. 

Surviving are: his wife of 60 years, the former M. Jane Mong, whom he married Oct. 5, 1952; five children, James Bruce Cornelius and his wife Allison, DuBois; Deborah J. Cornelius, Hermitage; Kim DeVite and her husband Dan, Masury; Judy Fair and her companion Jesse Sheldon, Galien, Mich.; and Andrew Cornelius and his wife Allyson, Sharon; six grandchildren: Kevin Cornelius and his wife Maegan, Kansas City, Mo.; Kristi Woodburn and her husband Matthew, Ephrata, Pa.; Justin Noble-Fair, Galien, Mich.; Tiffany Fair, Shenango Township; and Brittany Cornelius and Phillip Cornelius, both Sharon; a great granddaughter, Kyla Mae Woodburn, also Ephrata; a sister, Florence Sillery and her husband LeRoy, Reelsville, Ind.; a brother, Robert Cornelius and his wife Cheryl, of Texas; and several nieces and nephews. 

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Kenneth Cornelius and Bud Cornelius; and two sisters, Evelyn Beighley and Kathryn Martin.

Service: Funeral service will be 7 p.m. Thursday (4-18-13) in the funeral home with the Rev. David S. Evans, pastor of Hickory United Methodist Church, Hermitage, officiating.

Burial: Slippery Rock Cemetery.
