MARION, Ohio —
Norman Darrell Hassel of Marion was born Aug. 3, 1929, in Grove City and was called home on Sunday, Feb. 16, 2014, after an extended illness. He was 84.
Mr. Hassel was born to N.R. "Slim" Hassel and June Buxton Hassel and spent his young life in Grove City.
Mr. Hassel graduated from Grove City High School and attended Grove City College, where he was a member of Delta Iota Kappa fraternity.
Darrell joined the Navy in 1954 and was most proud of his time on the USS Valley Forge, CB-45.
After returning from the Navy, he found the love of his life, a beautiful petite blonde, Barbara J. White, and they married Nov. 27, 1958. She was a devoted wife of 55 years.
Darrell worked for Nabisco Co. for 28 years until his retirement in 1989.
His greatest joys in life were the times he spent with family and the priceless moments spent with his grandchildren, whom he adored.
He loved to play golf and was a member of Hickory Grove and Whetstone Country Clubs, both Marion. Some highlights were playing in the pro-ams, a couple of holes-in-one and his trips to Florida with his "golfing buddies."
In his early days, he loved horseback riding with his Grove City friends and also enjoyed hunting and fishing. Special family times were spent in Canada, boating the Upper Rideau, and fishing for pike in Westport, Ontario.
He had a passion for gardening and loved tending to his yard at his home in Grandview Estates, Marion. He loved sharing his stories with his family and coaching all to "work hard, go to school and always do the right thing."
He was a member of Tower Presbyterian Church, Grove City.
N. Darrell Hassel is survived by his wife, Barbara; a daughter, Debbie Hassel Campbell, wife of Jimmy; and seven grandchildren, Hunter, Nathaniel, Megan, Sierra, Norman, Nicholas and Ned.
