BUTLER — Dorothy A. Spence, Harrisville, died at 9:50 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2014, in VNA Inpatient Hospice, Butler. She was 95.

A daughter of James A. and Ruth A. Sloan Thompson, Mrs. Spence was born in Harrisville on Sept. 10, 1918.

She was a 1937 graduate of Harrisville High School.

She retired from Slippery Rock University after 10 years of service as a library clerk. Previously, she had worked as a sales clerk at Burdick's clothing, Grove City.

Dorothy was a member of Harmony Presbyterian Church.

She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and was a former member of the Eastern Star in Grove City and the Grove City Country Club. She was an avid golfer.

She married Ralph "Bub" Spence May 13, 1938. He died on Dec. 12, 1995. 

Surviving are: a daughter, Machelle A. Spence Scott, Summerville, S.C.; a son, R. James Spence, husband of Debra, West Sunbury; three grandchildren; a great-grandson;  her former daughter-in-law, Mary Spence, Butler; a sister, Marlene Davis, wife of James, Hot Springs Village, Ark.; two brothers, Frederick E. Thompson, Butler; and Glenn W. Thompson, husband of Margie, Meadville.

Mrs. Spence was preceded in death by a sister, Thelma Durschlag.

Calling hours: Were Friday (1-31-14) in JAMISON FUNERAL HOME, 117 N. Main St., Harrisville.

Services: Funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday (2-1-14) in the funeral home, with the Rev. Dr. Jeffrey W. Jones, pastor of Harmony Presbyterian Church, officiating.

Interment: To follow in Prairie Cemetery, Harrisville.
