Ex-Grove City area schools educator had family here

FRANKLIN — Faye Joanne Smith of Franklin passed away Monday morning, Dec. 30, 2013, in Sugar Creek Station, Franklin, after an extended illness. She was 87.

Miss Smith was born July 28, 1926, in Irwin Township, Venango County, a daughter of C. Raymond and Clare Sopher Smith.

Faye attended one-room Eakin School in Irwin Township, graduated from the former Wesley High School and graduated the following year from Grove City High School to complete four years of secondary education. She earned a bachelor's degree in elementary education from Slippery Rock State Teachers' College, now Slippery Rock University; and a master's degree and certificate of advanced studies in library science from the University of Pittsburgh.

Her teaching career spanned 39 years in Grove City area schools and North Hills School District, Pittsburgh, along with some time in Hawaii public schools, Shippensburg (Pa.) University and West Virginia University.

Miss Smith was an ordained elder and deacon and choir member of Presbyterian Church (USA), having been an active member of Amity Presbyterian Church, First Presbyterian Church of Pittsburgh and First Presbyterian Church of Franklin, respectively.

She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, an honorary international society of women educators; Beta Phi Mu, honorary library science society; Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees; Venango County Historical Society; and Mercer County Historical Society.

In her retirement, Miss Smith volunteered many hours at the historical society as a board member, genealogist, researcher and librarian, and as a librarian at her church.

She is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Walter (Betty) Hinds, Greenville; and Mrs. Paul (Vivian) Martin, Irwin Township; a brother, Earl Smith, Grove City; nine nieces and nephews; several grandnieces and -nephews, a great-grandnephew, two great-grandnieces, many cousins and a host of friends.

She was affectionately called "Aunt Faye" by many friends of the family.

Miss Smith was preceded in death by her parents and an infant baby sister.

In addition to her family and friends, Miss Smith enjoyed music, singing, concerts, ballet, the theater and reading.

Calling hours: Were Thursday (1-2-14) in CUNNINGHAM FUNERAL HOME Inc., Grove City.

Service: Funeral service was Friday (1-3-14) in the funeral home with the Rev. David A. Lingle officiating.

Interment: Mount Irwin Cemetery, Irwin Township, Venango County.
