SRU history prof was avid reader of newspapers

AUDUBON, Pa. — Dr. R. Robert "Bob" Stackman, Audubon, Pa. died Sunday, March 24, 2013 in the Meadows at Shannondell. He was 90.

Dr. Stackman was born Jan. 30, 1923 in South Bend, Ind., the son of Clarence and Bessie Cook Stackman.

He was a graduate of South Bend Central High School, class of 1941, and received both bachelor's and master's degrees in history from Indiana University. He went on to receive a doctorate in history from Michigan State University.

This led him to Slippery Rock University, where he was a history professor from 1968 until his retirement in 1985.

A lifelong Unitarian, Dr. Stackman was most recently a member of Main Line Unitarian Church in Devon, Pa.

He enjoyed bowling, golf and bridge. He was a loyal follower of the Indiana Hoosiers basketball team and San Francisco Giants baseball team. An avid reader of newspapers, he was passionate about current affairs.

He married the former Joan McBride, his loving and doting wife of 65 years. She survives.

After spending 20 years in Sun City, Ariz., the Stackmans returned to Pennsylvania in 2008.

Also surviving are: two daughters, Susan Black, wife of Richard, Grove City; and Linda Wentzel, wife of Gene, Boyertown, Pa.; and a son, Dr. William B. Stackman, husband of Teri Bump, South Bend, Ind. Dr. Stackman was also the proud Grandpa to seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by five brothers, Lowell, Lyle, John, Virgil and Roland; and two sisters, Evelyn and Mardel.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 13, 2013 in the Ashcroft Clubhouse, 1000 Shannondell Drive, Audubon, Pa.
